The Old State Bank.
Tho legal existence of this institution will cense on the 1st of January next, and iha Slate Board are determined to have its general affairs wound up by that.time. Tlio different branches will, each adopt their own method of closing np their bus* incss. Some, wo understand, will'sell their assets; others will assign them, which will operate similar to administer* ihg upon an estate. Ample' provision! will be made for all remaining liabilities,; hut the Board expect that nearly alt ,will le cancelled by the 1st'of January. We lopcat what we stated yesterday, that the old State Bank has been managed with .almost unparalleled success. We under* ttaud that one branch, which will present a fair average of all, has made average annual dividends, during its eutirft charlered existence, of 1*2 per cent. And it will likewise pay a surplus to its stockholders of at least 50 per caul. The profits of some of the branches have, exceeded even this. It will be seen from what wc have staled that the State, which owns inoto than a moiety of the stock, and furnished all the money capital, has derived a largo revenue from' this source. * It has icalizcd, after paying the inierest upon rite Bank Bonds and redeeming.the Bonds, at least, 50 per cent, profit upon lha investment. .Seldom it is ■ that 'a State or Government makes so spec illation in a business; operation, entirely foreign to the objects to which It shouM he strictly confined, and which should be left to individual enterprise alone. • It is estimated that about @200,000 of Iho circulation, au average ot about $15,000 to each of the thirteen branches, has been lost or destroyed. .' This is about the ucrcentagQ of loss in tho circulation of several banks which have been wound .up. The notes of , the State Bank have had a very general circulation and the loss will fully equal tho estimate. We advise all who hold the notes of the Bank to'rclurn them immediately for redemption. To facilitate the operation the Bank has arranged for the redemption of the notes of alt the branches, in this city, by exchange on New York at par. —Slafe Sentinel.
To the Honorable, the Circuit Court pf the County of Switzerland, State bi Imlianarj— The undersigned, grand Jurors empannelcd nn.1 sworn in the Switzerland Circuit Court, in ami for the body of the County of Switzerland, State of Indiana, at the November Term, 1858, of said Court, have examined and inspected the County Prison of sard county, as to the sufficiency thereof for the safe keeping of pri.vnicw, their convenient accommodation and health; abd as to the maimer in which the sarmVhas been kept since the last term of this Court. Upon Mich inspection wo find the same sufficient for the sale keeping of prisoners, ami as convenient for .their accommodation and health as prisons (in their opinion) can be constructed, and that the same has been properly kept. However, upon ruclnnspcction and information derived from the prisoners we found therein (ht-ing one female, and three males), wo find that the prison is so constructed that prisoners of the two sexes have to be kept together, in the sumo apartment day and night, unless they are separated by being,locked up in the veils. We would therefore recommend that such alteration be made in the construction of said prison, so that the two sexes (male and fenialo) may. bo kept apart, and in qur opinion that could and should he done by making an iron grated petition across the;hall on the,tight hand side of the dobr. enlcring into the prison, up to tbs ceil ing. A friend mentioned to us this week one of the most remarkable illustrations of decision, in breaking away a long-contin-ued habit, that we over heard. It was in tho case of,a relative of his, a venerable old gentleman, 94 years of age, who had been in the daily habit of using his pipe and tobacco for more than seventy years. As the result of mature deliberation, ha suddenly, one day, surrendered the weed and all its acctupaniraonts into tho hands of his family, with the very emphatic declaration, “There, take ’em awpy, I’ve done I shan’t smoke any more—I won’t dio with a pipe in my mouth." This determination was not in comequcnc of any consciousness of . impaired vigor by the use. of tobacco, for the old hero bad never been obliged to call a physician, and had never-known ariy thing whatever of the depression of disease—hut it came from the excorciso of a wise manly resolution, All honor to a veteran of 1J4 who could conquer a habit that had endured through “three score and ten I” John Leighton, EsqVof Boston, is the man.— Clinton Couranl.

. Things Lost FoiiEvaB.—Thofo! lowing words, from the pen of Lydia H. Sigourney, are full-bf instructive meaning: ; ;
Lost wealth may be restored by indnstry; tho wreck.of health regained by tern* pcrancc; forgotten knowledge restored by study; alienated friendship smoothed into forgetfulness; even forfeited reputation won by patience and virtue; bat who ever looked upon bis vanished hours, recalled his slighted years, stamped them with wisdom, or effaced from Heaven’s record the fearful blot of wasted time. Tho footprint on tho sand is washed out by the ocean wave, and easier might we, when years are fled, fmd that foot print than recall lost hours.
The, Greet Government, has sived the Olympic games. Perhaps it would havo done bettor if it had first revived the Greek people. It may be something more than, donhted if the modem Greeks can be roused to any very strong exertions by the prospect, of obtaining a few slips of the wild olive and a handful of palm leaves. Hellas will bo revived at the same time that tho old reeds and jose-lanrcls of tho Eurotas shall bloom lga:o.
