Snuff Dipping. ' f j We clip the following ftom a North! Carolina exchange: f There are, perhaps, in onr State, .*oue hundred arid twenty-five thousand women, leaving out of the account those who have; not cut their teeth, and those who hvae , lost them from.age. Of this number, SO per cent., may be safely set down as snuffi dippers. Every, five of'these will use npj a two ounce paper of snuff per day—that j is, the one hundred thousand dippers, twij j thousand five hundred pounds per day, | amounting in one year to the enormous | doaiitity of nine hundred and twelve thonjfiand pounds-.'• .In;this number of smut ‘ dippeta, is included all ages, colors nn l conditions, from Dinah in the kitchen‘m the mistress in the parlor —-from the Huh; miss of four years old to her oM grimly gtandniama, who has hut two snags in ! her head, ■ I am glad there are sunn* of, [ both black and white who are ahovt» lie I nasty practice, : included in the tiO pot ! ! cent., which 1 have-excepted. j I Think of the effects of this habit. Of; | these dippers, ssxtcen hundred marry cv- i cry year, thus, palming that nmiilcr of j sickly carcasses upon a like number oi the j sterner sox to pay doctor's bills fur, du-1 ring the remainder of thair lives. 8nnli is a greater corse than liquor in those places where it is used as a ibrultifico. , ■ Wo are no little aMouEhcd at the: statement, and ; must believe it ah exag-.j geralion. \Yo have often heard of dipping as vefy prevalent in Texas, but we are convinced that North Carolina can | beat us opt and.out. Judging from what we have seen in our travela in different sections, believe twenty-five percent,, of the women of Texas would be a large estimate of those addicted to. this-vice. And as for the ladies, not ten. per cent of them ever use the/ noxious "stick.”- Those that do, are easily distinguished as a bloated drudkard ‘ among gentlemen. Those who hava seen the sallow complexion, the wan, look,- the premature wrinktci, tho failed -connf#nanco which the "dipper” of a few years l addiction to (he habit is sure to/ possess, cannot be.mistaken. . ■. From the statements of the brought over in the Valorous, ‘we glean ! the following additional incidents of the burning;— When the flames had driven the passengers from the deck they clung to ropes hanging over the side of the vessel, bnt as tho numbers increased on the upper part of the ropes and strove to slide down them to keep clear df the smoke and flame, the . pressure became loo groat for those under- j neath, who, becoming exhausted by being j dragged through tho water, Jet go their bolds, and sank. The greatest confusion ensued, especially in tho aflcrpart of the ship, where the flames and i-niokc ponred in in intense volumes. Many ladies and even gentlemen, at the very first appearance of the flames on deck, jumped overboard, and of course were loft Jar astern by the vessel’s progression through the water. One gentleman threw all his children overboard, then his wife, and afterwards followed himsglf. This was not the only case «( a similar nature. ' Two beantiful 'girls (sisters,)' embraced cadi other on deck, and then, hand in hand; leaped into the water, and were seen to rise together—tho hair of the.-younger of them having become loose, felt'ov,er her face, when the. elder sister, moving it aside with her- hand, gave hern farewell Mss, and, closely locked in each other’s arms, they sank to rise no more. Another gentleman, holding on by a rope ia:tha , water with one hand, being towedby, the ship, in'-the other holding up his only child, with his wife clinging round his neck till nature became exhausted, and the wifi; and child Were swept away; he, poor man, stilt held on, unconscious, and yet was saved to bemoan their loss, and to bear the marks of the rope on his wrist ,lo his life's 'cod* .The bowsprit and fore part of thoship were crowded, and numbers were hanging outside by ropes. One fern ale, who • had a rope around her waist, was very much burned by the great heat of the shipVside. SW could hot free herself from the rop6,prget any oho to let it go, and she might have been roasted alive had not tlic ropc burnt through, when she full into the .water and was saved. Her wounds are now nearly healed. From the flames Inclining aft at the first, the doors of the grand saloon and companion ladders were;;soon in a blaze, fad dll those who were; in tho saloon were obliged to be hauled on deck . through the skylights.

All those who had jumped overboard at the first were left far astern by the ship's progress through the water, ami- made .ft watery grave. Most of those who were saved had managed to get a piece of plank, an oar or something to bear them selves up. number supposed to have been saved is sixty-six, out of about 5l0; ten ol these were part of the crew, thteo of whom were officers, the remainder passengers, including six females and three children. . ; The above facts have been collected from several of the most respectable passengers, who were convoyed* from Fayal to New York by H. B. 11. steam frigate Valorous. During the confusion and horrors of that day It was impossible for any one person to have seen or observed all that occnred. -Tbo scenes that they witnessed are too heartrending lor description, and can never bo effaced from their minds. One of the female earvivors lost her four children, and one lady was seen in the wtlerfor a long time, holding ftp her child with both hands over her head, and, even when her face was gradually disappearing below the water, the poor child was still holdup. i . ;
