But England and America, (and particularly America,) have their lyceums, promoting a spirit of free enquiry among their people; and who will compare Americans, or Englishmen, with Prussians, or other Europeans in point of intelligence. But it is not alone as promoters of intelligence among the people of our country, that we are to uphold lyccums. They are nursoriesofmorality. Young men find in them agreeably society, and the mind once interested, wishes not to wander for company, to where the card table ami wine glass are initiating villains.

Associations in the nature of: our own Philomatheau Society, though now more prevalent than formerly, are : still much underrated. Surely the ability to discriminate, rapidly and to reason | with correctness, on any subject, to originate ideas and to convey! them with force to others, and with as much ease to a large audience ns to a single individual, ' can never be entirely useless; or at least never be an impediment to any one, while it may be of incalculable \ benefit. If then as mental philosophers tell us, all the powers of the mind are - strengthened by exercise, would there not be less propriety in neglecting our common schools, than there is in this general neglect of literary societies. One fills the head with mere facts, the other, with ideals. Schools give us the materials of knowledge, lyceums teach us how to use thoge materials, so as to refine and ennoble the better part of ourselves and benefit our. fellow men, and without such knowledge, those materials can be of but little value. Like a misers gold, they are received and locked in a strong safe, from which neither charity nor pleasure, cun ever take them away. Among those whose precepts and examples enforce these truths, and demonstrate the utility of lyceums, ate the most honored names in the world. Clayi Wirt, and Banks, if their biographers tell the truth, certainly owe much of their celebrity to the training of good debating .clubs. These names are mentioned because their connection with lyceums is more, generally known and' because their, examples are regarded as peculiarly demonstrating the utility of lyceums, in forming the statesman and orator. But their names arendt the only ones connected with literary associations of this character. Biographers . may leave such connection unnoticed, but it would he hard to find a very great statesman or orator anywhere of whom it could ho. said with certainty, “he never . was a member of a, lyceum.” j And who can read ’ the life and writings of Franklin,. without feeling that he owes much of that deep practical philosophy, to his connection with the junto and other like associations. Lyceums are no modem invention. The schools of the ancient philosophers partook much of their . character, and from one of them founded by Aristotle, the name Lyceum originated. Where is there schools of equal renown or j destined to live longer in the memory of man than those of the ancient philosophers. ' The academy, the School of Socrates, and the lyceum,, though they have]

ought to be looked upon as entirely supplying the place of the lyceum. As even poor schools are better than none at all, so even poor lyceums, are better than to do without, hut surely they are capable-of being made much more beneficial to the countrythey are. Our legislators, while they are racking their brains for means of increasing the benefits of the common school system, should not forget the lyceum. Friends of education everywhere, when laboring for the universal spread of knowledge, should not forget the efficacy of the lyceum. 'OccIsrELLE'CTUAiNATUnE.—Wc suppose that we carry our moral nature into another world, why not our intellectual natnro?—further, why our acquirements? Is it probable that a man who has scorned here all advantages for commune with the works of God, is at once to be enlightened as if be bad done bis duty to the Intel-. Hgenca within him or about him? It may be noticed that, as far as we can discern, the same physical laws govern the most distant parts of creation as those which prevail bore. Moreover, what wo call Nature or Providence, is thrifty as well as liberal—has apparently given to man no more faculty than be fully needs. May not a similar divine frugality—perhaps an essential element for the furtherance of life, and the dovolopement of energy—pervade creation?.—[Friends in Council.
