j ; > . e; Columbus, lad., Sept, 22. * Yourreadcrs may be interested in 'the proceedings of the* Annual Conference of , Methodist Ministers' which ia now assent!Wing in this place. Columbus is the Seat of Bartholomew, and is a very nice little town, and full of very nice people. The Madison and Jeffersonville Railroads rhu through the place, and it is the terminus of the Shelbyvilla Railroad; Just now the health is Very good. ... : The Conference opens this morning, though some of the preachers have been here since Monday. Kev. W. R. Goodwin preached oh Monday bight, and Rev; E. G. Wood last night. Yesterday the different classes were examined, and 1 (earn that the examinations: were very creditable. 1 never saw - the Ministers looking so worn and jaded; many of them are not well, and several have left sick families at home.; Probably the excitement of Conference will give them new life and battiif health. Bishop Janes is ihcPtesfding Officer, and is on the ground. This Conference numbers nearly 150 ministers, many of. whom are the ablest in the State. As matters proceed I will keep you posted. | ; ; v,' ; , . . First Day— September 23. Conference met this morning—Bishbp Janes in the chair. After reading the Scriptures, singing, and prayer'by the Bishop, another hymn was sang, and Father Havens prayed. The roll-, was called, and it was found that none, had died during the past year, though several are now. sick at , home; Rev. W. W. Snyder was elected Secretary, and Revs. Kmick and Beliarroll,: Assistants., The ordinary: committees were rapidly appointed; Bishop Janes puts every thing through on the fast line.. A ta her interesting, discussion arose as to' ivliethora slavery committee should be ap minted or not. One minister considered 4 it unnecessary to express an opinion every year on this question, thinking it only tended to create useless excitement. Other ministers thought it proper to show each yea’r the advancement of opinion in icgard to the matter, so that the people might see that the Conference, as a boify, kept pace with the times. While listening to the ! discussion, 1 was reminded of related in a certain Conference, nrtt century ago. Some of the leading ministers had strenuously opposed the slavery .toport, as being calculated to injure the Church and the cause of Christianity. After harping much about pi udence, caution, moderation, d:c., a young, awkward/waggish minister arose, and said he was reminded of a father 'and son who were .nearly* freezing over a small fire in mid winter, when the snow was two feet deep. Says the, father:-^-* 1 John, you must go and get some chips for the fire.* John quietly remarked,—“I am afraid, father, I will geiutaldUI” So I thought of the fear of all these conservatisms,” -

The weekly return of the Board of Health shows; no abatement in the ravages of the disease which is carrying such desolation through the masses of our accumulated population. On the contrary there is an increase in the mortality, slight, it ia true, hut yet enough to show that we have hot yet reached the period of decline. From see and hear from those whose daily experience enable them to judged there ia yet mo diminution of the epidemic. ■ The number of cases seems, if anything, to increase. The favorable change in the weather may produce some, beneficial influence, but wo have been- disappointed so often in the hopes based npon such foundations, that'we cannot venture now .lb-predict any immediate improvement. There is, however, one mournful circumstance which may indicate a not very remote disappearance of the ; opidcmic.E There must, thus far, have been at least 10,000 persons attacked by yellow fever J of which number over 7,000 have passed safely through the proems of acclimation, while more than 2,000 have descended into the silent tomb. Sorely there cannot be vciy many more who ate liable to an attack. — S. O . Crescnt,

DTsraeli, speaking of the society of re** fined and. charming women, says:. It is an acqnainltancQ which, when habitual, cxccrcisos a gract .influence over the lone of the mind, even if it docs not produce any mote violent effects; It refines tho taste, quickens perception, and gives, as it were, a grace nod flexibility the intellect.*’ Somewhere else the same writer remarks "raeu'are as much fitimu: lated to mental effort by the sympathy of tho gentler sex, as by the detire of powrc and fame. Women arc more disposed to appreciate worllf and intellectual superiority than men, or at least, they are a« often captivated by the noble manifestations of genius, as by the fascinalious-of manners and the charms of person. And Sydney Smith says:,;- Among men of sense andjiheral politeness, twoman who has successfully cultivated her mind, without bioifiistng the-gentleness and propriety of her manners, is always sure to meet wjth a respect and attention bordering upon enthusiasm. Again,- another writer observes that. Of all other views a man may, in time, grow tired, hut in the countenance of women there is a variety whrehseta ‘ weariness at defiance. ’The divine right of beanty,’ says Junius, ‘is tho only divine right a man can acknowledge, and a pretty woman the only tyrant ho is not authorized to resist.

In an instant the noble dog leaped into tbs rushing water, and ho also soon disappeared. By this time the excitement was intense, and some persons on-shore supposing that the dog was lost as well as the child, procured a boat and started off in search of. the body. Just at this moment the dog was seen far away with something in his mouth. Bravely ho struggled with the waves; but it was evident his strength was fast failing, and mors than one breast gave a sigh of relief as the boat reached him, and it was announced that he had (ho child, and it was still alive. They were brought to the shore— the dog and the child. Giving a single glance ‘‘to satisfy herself that the child was really living, the young mother rushed forward and sinking beside the dog, throw her arms around his neck and burst into tears.. Not many could view the sight unmoved, and as she caressed and kissed his shaggy head, she looked up toils owner and said—“Oh, air, 1 must have this dog! 1 am rich; take all I have, everything, but give me my child’s preserver!” The gentleman smiled, and patting his dog’s head, said—“l ath very glad he has been of service to you; but nothing could induce me to part with him.”
