Temperance. > . I “Does tobacco smoke affect'The lungs? Dr. - — assures me that, in the act of smoking, it does not reach them, and therefore can not injure them.” The doctor is mistaken in relation to both points. Tobacco smoke does reach the lungs; but if it did hot, the effect would be mjurious. No poison can be taken into the mouth without seriously injuring the whole organism. By its paralyzing influence on the nerves Of respiration, tobacco greatly impairs the functions of respiration, When taken in the way of smoking or chewing.

Djilocajkd Joists.— Neil in degree to the paid csosed by a dislocation, is that arising' from.tbe settling of blood around the part, and the effusion of coagulated lymph under the skin. The proper treatment to remove this disagreeable and invariable attendant upon dislocations and bruises, is to apply some powerfully penetrating and diffusive Liniment, with gentle frictions, overthe part. The best Liniment now in use, for this puspose, is Bubo's Aacric Lisiment, which may be obtained at any respectable drug store. It is also cooling and soothing in its effect, and allays the pain almost immediately. jel8-2w
