A Steam Thrashing Machine.
On.SaturJavvre witnessed the
thrashing of wliOUt by macdiinory. oh the farm of Mr. Birken- . mayor in this vicinity. . The steam boiler und engine were manufactured by Messrs. Ilasselman& Vhuon, of this city, and the thrasher by Messrs. Qarr & Co., of Richmond. The apparatus is the property of the Messrs. Graham, who fire thrashing all the wheat, that is utiered them to dean—taking their apparatus to any point desired. The process of thrashing by steam is cheaper than hy horse power. The holier and engine do notcosf as much as the number of 1 airses required to propel ilie t liras her, and'the cost ofgeucraling poweri/motns great as that of supplying t!ie horses with ibofl. while the engine is less trouble to (eke care of ami occupies less room than the morses.— ItulittiWjiolis Journal.

Of the many ways to tell bud eggs, I know ot‘ only one that I can put entire confidence in. “If an egg will float it is bad,” eays one, “If it iswanu at both ends, look exit, tor it,”’ says another. “If it has not a clear look when yon hold it against a strong light, have a. care,” says a third,' and so oh half a dozen ways beside. : Kow anyone that hastried ttio first way, knows that a bad egg will sometimes sink; and ,as to the secbnd'phm, it is often dif llcult to tell in a fresh egg which sstho waroi-end; and iis to the plan of ioolciu g through an egg, I would really like to know what can.bc seen in the operation. Plants.
In the garden at ' ICew, England, for seventy years past, upwards ofUventy thousand plants grow in the open air, and this within a spacewUieh/iflolt to nature woiUd uot havocontaihaf 200 indigenous plants.,: . These plants have been collected Iroin all quartern of the globe. Besides these yUere are many thorn sand otherjplants that are cultivated in the hot and green houses. Ten thousand experiments. oil seven hundred species of plants have* produced but two hundred and fifty hybrids. Isolation continues lor a while; some of these hybrids,'..yet. they would soon disappear if left to themselves. ; Wo have many advantages in the United States for an extciisive garden for the collection and! cultivation of exotics not possess- j ed iu England, and we should be j glad to see such a garden as that | at lCew,in the City of Washing- i ton, or in a more suitable place,! under the management of compe-! tent persons, at the expense of the i United States. Such a garden, in connection with an experimental farm might besQConducted as to he of great practical advantage to the country at large. But wo are enconraged to expect but little hi this useful department, cither from the General or State : ■ «
