■, There is, an; interesting experiment on the Few York canals, to test the ptneticdbility of using, steam on. the canals. Several togs ami several stoarn canal boats were ilrictl.. The result showed that there are objections to the use of steam tugs on the canals. They arc so short that sometimes the. stern and. sometimes the bow touches the bottom. The move merit, was irregular and too much of a wave created., The propellers, arranged with 2 wheels, operate much more satisfactorily. .' They create' less wave, and their movement is more steady,; When moving at the rate of five*miles an hour, the waves iworo less jhan three inches in height arid not sufficient to injure-the canal banks.-. The lugs, at the same rate of speed, made a wave of 2 to 3 feet, which would inevitably damage the canal. Propellers, it is thought, might be constructed which would. carry from 150 to 200 tons and tow another boat carrying an equal amount of freight. - ,
