Then, according to tho statistics of Captain Lockhart, the superintendent of the canal, tbs river at tho head, of the falls rose altogether forty-two feet,. At the foot.of the fells tho rise was sixty-four feet. In 1847 the raise of the water was nearly eqnal to to the flood of* ’37. In ordinary freshets the water has risen some thirty-six feet at the head of the falls, and fifty-two feat at Portland.
