Why Is Clover Beneficial.to Land?.
Because it derives'a of car* bon from tho air, which the clover supplies to the coil. * A' dry stock of clover consists almost entirely of carbon. If a crop of clover is turned under and decays, a large quantity of carbon is distributed in the eorl. Even if the crop is not turned under, a large amount Is deposited in the soil through tho roots of tho plant. Carbon forms the - basis, of charcoal, and by agricultural writers is frequently used syDomraonriy .with that won). ;It is an excellent absorbent, and for.this reason is'voidable in soils, for the purpose of retaining manures.nnd nil fertile matters. In Europe, and in many places In this country where the. soil is poor and, manures costly, carbon (or chaicoalj.is frequently scattered over heaps of manure or other substances emitting, offensive odors, and the gasses- thus escaping will be absorbed;rib .charcoal.' It is also.do excellent' absorbent of moistnie, and ■ is therefore very valuable In soils.. It also renders the soil warmer, and, in Cue, la one of the most valuable manures. It uot our purpose hero to speak of all' ita’excCllent qualities,'but we wUb merely to.say that in no way can it be so easily and cheaply .combined with the soil as by raising clover. Farmers who have triid it ami seen its effect upon their soil, consider it one hi', the best ways of keeping thetr land in'a fertile stale, by raising it as an alternate crop..

Mr. Williams of Knox presided; and Mr. Babb' of Ohio bis experience with Ibis canel Ho said he bad been one of those who had no confidence in its success, bat bad raised it, In manufacturing molasses he used a cider press to crush the .cane, •which answered a very good purpose for experimenting, but it did not'extract the juice entirely. Be was satisfied that good cane-would yield 300 gallons to the acre. He had made it nt different stages’of ripeness of the cone; bad cut it five weeks in succession, and the riper it was, the richer the juice. Five aud a half g»N ; Jons of this would yield about one gallon of molasses. He bad found it difficult to keep the syrup from turning, ns he boiled it in common kettles;, but bo thought there would be no danger in properly'constructed pans, where the firo would strike the bottom only, and not the sides. In a kettle witb 12 inches depth of the juice there would, rise a scum of 3 indies on. the top. This bad to be taken off, ami ho bad used both lime and .soda to neutralize the add, but ho thought these unnecessary. They made the molasses of a dark color. His best aud lightest colored ho had mndo by raising the scum with a gradual boat alone. White of eggs beaten ho used to clarify the syrup.- The amount of juice extracted- was obont 00 lbs. to every 100 of tbo cants. The blades he stripped-efi* by knocking them with a’stick, before bccut tbo canes/' The blades and tops he had fed to milk cows, and their yield of milk had been increased at least one-fifth, and the butter was more yellow. In order to test whether tbo jnico would ferment In the cane, after being cut, be had left it standing forty-eight hours in a hot sou, aud could perceive no change In it. Ho bad also left the juice stand 13 hours before boiling,- and had .made as good molossosi from it.ns any other, ; Mr. Hedges, of Cincinnati, spoke of the attention be had given to the subject of tho Chinese Sugar Cane, and his determination to perfect a mill for pleasing! tho stalks/and pans for boiling the juice,: All hia information satis-tied him that the yield of molasses would be at least 300 gallons pur acre. Mr. Peters, of Georgia, had rcieutly Written to him that the molnsjes be had made- this year wd6 too thick,-for it was laming to sugar. -Mr. Hedges here exhibited a vial of thick molasses be bad made, showing its granulating character, and pointing out the gum * ‘my tubitance which . prevented the draining of the molasses, and leaving dry the grained sngar. *• The difficulty in making tbs molasses was to purify it from the gum. and acid. The best means to nentrallze'tbe acid was the nso of lime wotcr or soda, hnd puri-: fying the symp with animal .charcoal.— After the last is pat iu, the syrap should be gradually healed and then poured thro* a long flannel sack—the length being necessary in order to have as much clcan'aurface as possible, as the gum and other imparities would prevent the syrup from draining.
