t To-day we had the pleasure of meeting Colonol Johnson Watte, Ool. Thomas |Smith, and Ool, Daniel Kelso—all well known 'in old Switzerland. Messrs. Watts and Smith, although getting along in years, seem yet active and in the prime of life—the past ten years having made but little visible change in them. Mr. Kelso we fonnd in feeble health,- just recovering fiom a severe attack of sickness. Messrs. Carter, Ormsby, Adkinson, and the writer, accepted a pressing invitation to dine with Col, Kelso, thns partaking of an excellent dinner with a friend, instead of potting op with a poor one at the hotel. Col. Kelso provides bounlifolly, and under the direction of his estimable lady, the. culinary department of his honse is deserving of all praise. The Versailles Dispatch,

IUx»a Bom, VrurntM, July 27U», 1857. i . Yesterdsy morning, in company with several friends, we started by land for the capital of Ripley county, Indiana. Passing rapidly along, we noticed nothing of special interest; the country through which wo passed was fine, on either side the traveler is afforded a view of good farms, neat dwelling bouses, and holds of golden grain. The pleasant villages of Mt. Sterling, Bennington, and Pleasant, present little or no signs of improvement. They appear to he finished towns, like a good many others we could name. In the edge of Ripley county, we passed the ancient residence of Col, Innis, an aged man, who owns a fine farm, lives independently, and seems to take the world easy. Col. I. was formerly a bitter partisan, os the anecdote we are about to relate will show. In 1844, he was an enthusiastic Olay man, and had a sign stuck out with, the following words inscribed on it:—“Clay men entertained at reduced prices—Polkites can pass on.*' It is said that one night at d very lata hour, during a very heavy rain, a traveler passing tbatway, rode op to the Colonel's fence, and after repeated calls of "hallo the honse," aroused the landlord from bis clumber, when the following conversation took place; Traveler —"Cau l stay all night here?" irmti4-“That will depend altogether npon circumstances (" T.—"Well, then, under what circumstances can 1 stay?" I. —"Are yon a Wbigor a Democrat?” T. —"It makes no difference about that ->-11 yon are a human, yon will not refuse to admit me on sqch a night as this.”

Near ten years have-passed since we visited Versailles, where wo once lived two years. We found many changes—in fact, wo recognized but few familiar faces. We were; not there'long before wo visited the ’ grave-yard, situated npon the bluff of Langhery, It is a beautiful, and to iqany an endearing place. Many of those we were wont to associate with in early ‘ lifotnow. sleep the sleep that knows no waking in this pleasant city of the dead; The grave-yard is always a place of nnnsual interest to ris, and we always pay it an early visit upon going to a village or city. It has a tendency to raise one’s thoughts on high, where sorrows never come, and pleasures ne'er shall end: where sickness, pain and death are felt and feared no more!

Versailles, Whore, although .it was Sunday, we found a trial going on in the Coart House before the Common Picas Judge. A man charged with house-burning had been confined in jail for a couple of (reeks, bat on Saturday evening ho was taken out on a writ ol habeas corpus, and the Court declaring it to bs a caso ef'emergency, tbo examination was commenced and continued all the day, without getting through with it. Clta*. N. Shook, Esq., of Versailles, is the Judge forEipley and Dearborn counties, and although quite young to fill so important a position, he presides with considerable dignity and promptness. . Versailles has'improved considerably since wa last saw it, thongh but little improvement is now'going on. There is a plank road leading to Madison, end the railroad ia within six miles of it, with- an omnibus running to meet , each train. The place has some good buildings in it, and considerable business is done, in a small way. It has many good people in it, but the state of morals is very bad indeed. Virtue is at a low ebb, and ia rather the exception than the rule. Female virtue especially is disregarded to an alarming extent. Licentiousness runs riot here, and few, but very few, are entirely free from ita debasing and corropting infiaonces. We have many friends and acquaintances there, whom we greatly respect, and they will agree with ns in the above remarks, l Lawyers and Lawsuits.

Versailles and Ripley county are noted (pp lawyers and lawsuits. The Court docket is heavy each term, ami yet only the worst and most aggravated cases of law* lessiiess are over punished or seldom at* tempted to be punished by law. There are some lawyers about Versailles, who encourage litigation among men, aud never fail to use their influence and advice to get paying men into lawsuits, thereby causing much more trouble and bad feeling among friends and neighbors than would obtain if the lawyers were more honest and conscientious. They have at least throe lawyera in Ripley, where wo have one in Switzerland county.
