Switzer]and Cpunly may well bo regarded as tho impregnable bulwark of Americanism in the State of Indiana.— The Council fires of the Order upon its first appearance in this State, were kindled in this county. First started at Patriot, it sOon spread to Mt. Sterling, then to Vevay, and from thenco to eycry township in the county. Soon the American party was firmly, organized in’ the county, several of the Towuyjnps having as many ns three: Councils ji| operation. The pnlilic mind scorned to bp prepared for tho reception .'of the American doc* [trines, and they were received as "good news nud glml tidings” by‘dll. who were accounted .worthy to enter thoAYigwarns of the Order; The rapid inctcnse of the party, its silent and onward course, made party leaders and office-seekers tremble; and a terribly howl was set up all over the cou.il ty— tho ■ mem hers of the party were called 11 robberv' "thieves,” "trail* ors,” V lory’s“tnmdeiers,”"midnight* assassins,”-"honsc-burner. 1 ?,” *kc. Uut the faithful heeded not'the commotion without, for within all was harmony and peace. While noisy- politicians, were bawling, upon -the street-corners, - the members of the qnictly appealing to the hearts and consciences, of men.. Ti tu c qiasrcd on —-1 Uo Oclohui election camp off—andthe American party earned the county. by ah overwhelming majority. . . After the election, many men, who had joined the parly Tor the purpose of g?tting office, and were 'disappointed, left the pjirty. There are always some men whose'only aim is id get into office; and these men soon.got "disgusted” with the’ American parly; the. plan, of allowing every member of the party- to have a vote in (ho selection of candidates, ruined their prospects—and they left! The * party still lived, and triumphantly elected every candidate at the October election, 1855.
