miles-an-hour during an attempt |
The 53-year-old Cobb, holder of the world automobile speed record of 394.196 mph, suffered a broken neck wheW his $42,000 “Crusader” broke apart on famous Loch Ness. The London fur broker was trying to crack the international speedboat mark held by Stanley Sayres of the United States.
» ® » THE SPEEDBOAT had reached its peak speed and had flashed over the starting point of the mile course at Loch Ness at 205 mph when horrified spectators saw it suddenly dive and break apart. Mrs. Vicky Cobb, wife of the 200-pound daredevil, screamed: “Oh, no it can't be true.
| John.”
” » » THERE were a few minutes of tragic hope as Mr. Cobb bobbed back to the surface in his life jacket. Spectators on shore cheered as a small motorboat reached the wreckage-littered water and Mr, Cobb was pulled aboard. A doctor in the boat gave first aid, but shortly after the rescue boat reached the pier, the speed racer died. The doctor said his neck had been broken.
