Sermon of the Week—

‘Light of the World’ *

LOOKING at the above biblical statement from a a human standpoint, we immediately realize that it is an dmazing claim. Here is an humble man, from an obscure village, in a despised country, living among a subject

people, standing up and saying: “I am the light*of the world.” No doubt’ it was early ‘in the morning when our Lord came to the Temple, and as He stood there that morning, sthe light, no doubt was streaming in through the eastern windows. This light on its way, caught the mountains, burst upon the fields, the vineyards, and the groves, and chased away the last trace of darkness.

Standing before the multitude that had flocked to hear Him speak, Jesus literally said: “My mission is to dispel darkness.” This is a symbolically beautiful statement, and certainly the cleanest and purest thing we know is_a ray of light. Even though passing through a polluted area, it comes out as clean as ft went in. » ” ~ THERE ARE some leszons for us in this brief scriptural

Scripture: “I am the light of the world: He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12.

Note—Dr. K. K, Merryman, superintendent of the Indianapolis District, Indiana Conference South, Evangelical United Brethren Church, wrote this “Sermon of the Week” for The Times.

Jesus Christ Himself. He isn't a reflector of light like a mirror, or a conveyer of light like a lense, but He is “the Light.” It is the Son of God that is making this statement, and it is His purpose, as we draw near to Him, to flood our life with light. What does light do? It dispels darkness, so, when we throw opén the windows of our lives to Christ, the denge darkness within us ‘vanishes, ~nd as long as ‘the. light of the world” shines within our hearts, there can be no darkness there.

- may be, the light is sufficient. The greatest darkness of this age is the darkness of sin, and Jesus Christ is the only one who can dispel that dgrkness, Let Him shine in, hav ntrol, and leadership in your life, and we will walk in the light and not in the darkness. He says “ye shall not walk in darkness.”, » ” - % THE LIGHT has treméndous power. It is positive power, and the scripture above says: “Ye shall have the light of life.” The interesting thing about it is that he says in another place: “Ye are the light of the world,” so when this light shines into our hearts, it is our responsibility to reflect it into the hearts and lives of others. Men have suggested all sorts of means whereby our world can become a beautiful, peaceful, and wonderful place to live. The ways of men have failed to
