SUNKEN LIVING ROOM—Mrs. Marten Blunck by the fireside in home she decorated and designed in 3330 Rex Dr.

By OPAL CROCKETT Times Homes Editor

“YN OMEN,” muttered the men building the Marten Blunck home in 3330 Rex Dr.

They didn't stop Mrs. Blunck. The ado was about the holes Mrs. Blunck wanted

cut in the big pink stone fireplace. “Do you want round holes?” the men asked, smirking. She didn't. She wanted long ‘ones—as slots to hold plants. Mrs. Blunck then squared her shoulders and asked for holes in the ceiling to hold spotlights to focus on the fireplace. Up went workmen's hands, “Even my husband was againsg me,” Mrs. Blunck said. But she climbed a ladder and drew circles to mark spots for the lights, “Men never want anything new, Come home with a new hat and they make fun of it. Once they're used to it, they like it,” she sald.

» » ” MRS. BLUNCK had more {deas ~~ and woli. She objected to care of woodwork and hardwood floors. She used 10-point trim which is a curved metal strip that replaces all framing. She used only a 5-foot strip of hardwood flooring. She wanted the living room ceiling to look higher. The room was sunken, making it gix inches higher than any room in the house. She wanted a big shower. Hers is so big a regular shower bottom wouldn't fit. It was poured in concrete. Through the house are sliding door wardrobes and shelves. Picture windows on the east wall in the living room are immense—16 by 9 feet. In living and dining rooms is valance indirect lighting. : . PRE . MRS. BLUNCK coddled the work crews. She was smart enough to sidestep womanly mistakes. She didn't change her mind after building started. She had some advantages. She majored in interior decorating and architectural drawing in New York. She did the interior decoration and some of the interior design for the 25 houses her husband built last year. She keeps the books and pays the help in the business. There's a telephone on the din-

his wife. In lemon yellow and green it has cove lighting. You can smack down dishes with a thud on the green Cusheen rub-ber-based counter tops. The ranch contemporary house of Indiana limestone is beautifully landscaped. Outside the east living room window is a huge flower box, holding red sage this season. The davenport in the living room is “chocolate soda” figured satin with metallic thread. Custom-made by Goldstein’s, it's big and placed across from the 16-foot-long fireplace, Colors take their clue from, the Koo-Young drapes with side effect of Montmartre print with its Paris scenes. Main colors are chartreuse, chocolate, coral and green. Two side chairs are upholstered in coral velvet as are dining room chairs. Woods in both rooms are bleached. Living room lamps are gold and white China. Over the davenport is a Vermont scene to remind the Bluncks of summer vacations in Fairlee. Carpeting is beige and walls are forest green. » » » AYRES’ furnished drapes and Goldstein's provided cus-tom-made ‘furniture. Lamps are white China, walls are gray-green and the carpet is Gullistan Renaissance. The big bathroom is in pink. Son Bill's room is gray and red

and the girls’ room is done in coffee and aqua. Between jobs and phone calls Mrs. Blunck refinishes old furniture, thinks about the swimmining pool and rathskeller she plans for her house and studies her lessons. She’s studying German with her husband, a native of Germany, as tutor. She needs German-Russian and Latvian

vocabularies to talk with employees. Among them are 15 Latvians, Decorating doesn't have to be costly to Interest Mrs. Blunck. “Decorating a small apartment on a budget is as much fun as decorating a large

home without a budget,” she said.

‘Little Old Lady’ Shows Up the Experts

HE PROVERBIAL “little old lady” was the South player in today's deal. The hand is from a recent tournament, and East and West were two nationally known players, After expressing herself at some length concerning her awe .at meeting such distinguished opponents, the lady proceeded to beat their brains out, Mercifully, East and West shall remain nameless. » » »

IT MAY BE stated with a

fair degree of conservatism that -

South's jump to four spades was a bit on the optimistic side. With the lead of the ace and dnother heart, the contract

would have been down two and possibly more. But West led his lone queen of diamonds, Dummy's ace won and the queen of spades was led and finessed. West took the king and elected to return a trump. South won in her own hand and led a third round of trumps, West discarding a heart. Now she promptly tossed out the seven of hearts. West flinched a little and played low. Dummy's jack won. Back came the five of diamonds, East ‘ducked and South finessed the eight spot, » ~ » PLAYING stolidly and with absolutely no show of elation at the way things were developing, she next led the jack of diamonds and pitehed the deuce

Is New Pattern

Autumn brides will not want to decide definitely on a silver pattern without seeing Reed Barton's newest, “Silver Wheat.” Of charmingly rounded contour with tilted-up tip for gayety, the wheat motif is placed on the center of the shaft where it aids firm gripping as well as adding a rhythmic sweep of decorative design. Basically modern in feeling, “Silver Wheat” is available in flat as well as hollowware.

Desperately trying to reach his partner's hand, he underled the ace of clubs. Without a thought, South put up the king Pind won the trick. Her next play was the 10 of dia~ monds and off went dummy’s last heart. Now the king of hearts was pushed through West and the ace ruffed out. South had a trump and the good queen of hearts left, for her ninth and 10th tricks. She looked apologetically at her partner when she had to give up a trick at the end to East's ace of clubs. “Could I have made more?” she asked. But the defenders didn’t hear, They were already stumbling numbly toward the bar,
