It had a postoffie, The | town was connected to Indianap{olis by the electric trolley which | made its turn-around at Illinois | and 38th §f.” He told how heavy rains often bogged down wagons arid buggies to their hubs, forcing calls for help. Mr, Taylor himself drove a wagon while working as a $9-a-week clerk for C. W. Rosetter who had a store across the street from where Mr. Taylor now does business, Some years later, Mr. Taylor bought out his boss. He employed a single clerk at $5 a week, later added another, and kept {growing until he now provides work for 22 fulltime people and three partime workers.

Business Expands
The grocer thinks his business is typical of others in the area. As Indianapolis spilled its population over {its borders, homes were built to the north. They
lout past the gravel road. We all
THEY KNEW IT WHEN—These fo
men came to prqvide them.
Mr. Taylor has seen nearly all) of them expand, enlarging quart-| ers, hiring more people, serving greater areas, Describing the changes, Mr. Taylor jointed out that hardly a! building, which housed Mapleton's’ businesses then, now stands in the | heart of the commercial zone. | Mapleton’s location was a busi-! ness “natural.” Instead of hit-| ting a peak and leveling off, busi-| ness grew better. Mr. Taylor does not have the (oldest business in the district, although he is the oldest businessman. 'Three generations in the same family have managed the Reis Blacksmith Shop. When that firm started, only al grocery or two and a drug store! were operating. Success of the! district was attributed by Mr, Tay-| lor to “the type of businessman | who came in.”
Personality Plus
The Mapleton district bubbles business personality. Mr.,, Mrs. or Miss are titles seldom heard in the dealings of | the merchants with each other. | They are quicle with the friendly | insult, use first names, and refer to Mr. Taylor as “D. 0.” Many of their customers are “first name” peopla too. That |
business spirit has been a key-| note in Mapleton expansion. It has led to the organization of a closely knit business association strong in civic enterprise. { Tomorrow's festival is one point. | The association Has from time!
