Bible Live On
By EMMA RIVERS MILNER Times Chuteh Editor
Perhaps you are one of those loyal persons whose
heart is big enough to hold welcoming new ones. Then you can continue
Bible while bowing to the new
Revised Standard Version. Indianapolis Protestants wil mark the release ru of the Revised Standard Vers sion of the Bible with a mass meeting § Tuesday night © in Cadle Taber- ~~ nacle. All over the United States & and in some foreign countries, similar celebrations will be held. The re-

the greatest event of the kind in Protestantism in more than 300
years.
Did your father or your grand-
father always inscribe the name
of each new infant in the old family Bible as soon as the child
arrived?
Can you see him now, in retrospect, a proud though somewhat nervous smile on his face? His hand shakes just a little as he writes in flowing script the new
name on the page. Fascinating Picture
And do you recall the family It was fully six inches thick, covered with leather empossed in gold letters and decoillustrations showed the brave Daniel among the lions, the BO David beside

the dead giant, the Baby Jesus lying upon straw which looked “scratchy” to you, and countless other fascinating pictures. Then there is your own personal King James Bible. It reproaches you a bit as you bend its pliable leather cover and pages in your hands. It means a great deal to you, always has, and yet you feel you never have read it quite enough. Mindful of these things, we wondered wistfully if it will be
a case of “the king is dead, long live the king” with your old Bible,
Dr. Henry G, White, minister of the Irvington Methodist Church, is the very person to consult about such a question, about any question, or problem that troubles you. Countless men and women seek him out for counsel in his study. Revision Necessary
. Dr. White saved the cream of his opinion until the end of our conversation. He made quite clear to this reporter that it was imperative that the King James Version of the Bible be revised because much of its is unintelligible to the 20th century reader, “We have gathered together the greatest scholars of our time to prepare the new version so its insights are available to everyone,” was his verdict. “I think it is the duty of ministers and teachers to encourage its use, to get it into the hands of our people. I believe it will replace the King James Version in.the next generation so;far as the layman is concerned.” And now for the cream: Dr. White did not read the Bible very much as he grew up, did not become a religious man until he was 25, he told me. After that, he read the Bible straight through from beginning to end. “Then I went back over it, marked the passages that seemed | most helpful and memorized them,” he recalled.
‘Land of Discovery’
“I suppose I've read 3000 books and I have found thefe is no| great insight about the meaning and purpose of life which the Bible does not contain. I have found my truth in the Bible and my technique in my other reading. The Bible was the land of
discovery. “Even when some of the language of the King James

Music in Words
| Then Dr. White quoted snatches from the old Bible which have |endeared themselves to him. Just listen to their music: “Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain.” Is, 40:4 “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” John 14:1 “Though I speak with the
