Blackwood on Bridge—

Fourth of High’Card Power Is Enough to Suggest Gam

When Mr. Meek opened the bidding with one spade, Mrs. Keen correctly decided that she had enough to make two bids. She had about the equal of an

average hand—25 per cent of the high card strength. This was not enough for game une less Mr, Meek had something over a minimum opening in distribution of high cards. But it was enough to suggest game by bidding twice. Mrs. Keen's first bid was two clubs. . Mr. Meek , then made the gross underbid of two spades. A two no trump bid would have shown his true strength. However, it was fortunate that he was so conservative as Mrs. Keen might have raised to three no trump—a hopeless contract in this case. Mrs. Keen's second bid was three spades which even Mr. Meek could not pass. He went on to four and Mr. Dale led the king of diamonds. While Mr. Meek’s cautiousness

in the bidding was open to criticism, his ecautiousness in the play was commendable indeed. He won the first trick with the ace of diamonds. He"lald down the ace of spades and“saw Mr. Dale drop the queen. Here he paused to reassess his chances. He had to lose a club and a diamond. Therefore he could afford to lose one spade. But not two.

tricks at all. But if the queen really were a singleton, then Mr. Abel had J-9-7 left. Here the play of the king at trick three would lose two spade tricks for sure—and put the contract down one. The chance for an extra trick left Mr. Meek absolutely cold. At trick three he simply led a low spade toward the tem. If he lost to the lone jack on his left he would still take ten tricks. As it was, Mr. Dale showed out and Mr. Abel beat dummy’s ten with the jack. But later Mr. Meek was able to take the marked finesse against Mr.

the fall handiwork of “Old Jack Frost.” Actually, even without frost, the leaves of most broad-leafed trees start turning color because of a process that takes place in the leaves which slowly cuts off water and food to them. The green disappears and the leaf slowly dies. In the week or so

[that this process takes place and the leaf is still attached

to the tree, a chemical reaction changes the leaf from green to some other color. : Yellows, orange, deep red, and purple in all their various hues are revealed. Since “Jack Frost” arrives about this time, he often gets credit for this beauty. Sweet gum, ash and sassafras turn purple or deep red. Aspen, birch, elm, poplars, and tulip turn yellow with one chemical, while the sugar maples turn orange and red with

still another chemical. Keep a record of the different trees and their colors in your neighborhood.
