Mrs. HST's Gown in Museum

By RUTH GMEINER United Press Staff Correspondent

WASHINGTON, Sept. 26—Mrs. Bess Truman already has given the Smithsonian Institution the dress she wants to go info the museum's collection of First

Ladies’ Gowns. The public won't get to see it until next January, but it was learned Mrs. Truman sent the dress to the Smithsonian some

time ago. She requested that in accord with custom the gown be withheld from the display until after she and President Truman leave the White House. That tradition has been broken only once—when Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, while still first lady, allowed the museum to add to the collection the ivory-peach satin she wore at the 1941 Inaugural Ball, » » » MRS. TRUMAN chose one of her favorite gowns for the Smithsonian—a gray brocade affair designed by Mme, Pola

+ y0f New York.

Her Inaugural Ball gown, fashioned out of $35-a-yard hand-woven gold, red and

green brocade, already has been given to a museum in

Kansas City. Another of her inaugural clothes, a sky-blue silk moire gown, has been sent to a museum in Jefferson City, Mo. ” » “ MRS. TRUMAN'S gown will take its place alongside other famous dresses such as a black

velvet ball gown worn by the second Mrs. Woodrow Wilson during the Paris Peace Conference, and Martha Washington's unusual gown of salmon pink faille with hand-painted wild flowers and insects. The Smithsonian is now preparing a plaster figure to conform with Mrs. Truman's proportions. All the figures in the collection are coples of a famous sculpture of Cordelia, daughter

‘of Shakespeare's King Lear.

The eyes and hairdress of each figure are changed to suit the personality of the First Lady it is supposed to represent.
