Farmers Capture Escape
Convict Rode Truck From | Indiana Prison
MICHIGAN CITY, Sept. 25 (UP)—An armed convicted mur-| derer who escaped from Indiana
by the uncle of a woman he slashed with a knife in his flight. John R. Parnell, 21, St. Louis, | Mo., one of four “laughing killers” who shot a Franklin, Ind. | liquor store clerk during a holdup, was floored in a hardware store at Hanna, Ind., near here, by Lewis Walter. Mr. Walter was a member nf a hastily-formed posse which trailed Parnell to the store after the convict slashed Walter's niece, Mrs. Willard Werner, 24. Mrs. Werner was ‘cut in the doorway of her home as she ran| from Parnell. She ran to the| Walter home nearby. Later, she was taken to a Valparaiso hospital suffering from- shock and a “glight cut” on her left hand. Parnell was captured and tied by the posse as he sought shells for a stolen shotgun. | La Porte County Sheriff Norman Reeg took Parnell 19 hours | after he escaped from a life term, | apparently by hiding in baled | paper in a salvage truck. Warden Blames Guards
Warden Alfred Dowd, who de‘seribed Parnell ag a “very good inmate,” said the guards “definitely” were at fault, “It looked suspicious,” said Warden Dowd. “They should have investigated the box before the truck went out.” Joe Walker, truck driver, told police he drove from the prison to his home and parked, two blocks from busy U. 8. 12, As he]
left home to drive to the salvage { yard, Mr. Walker said, he noticed
scraps of paper on the ground. Parnell slipped away about 3:30 p. m. yesterday, the warden said. His absence was not noticed until the prisoners were counted an hour later. Parnell was one of four men sentenced to. life in the robbery and shooting of Lloyd Abbett, 49, Franklin liquor store clerk, on Mar. 2, 1949.
Said Killer Laughed
Mr. Abbett, before he died, told police one of the holdup men laughed as he shot. William Caine, 30, Evansville, was dubbed the “laughing killer” after he confessed to the shooting. The other two accomplices were Albert Hansbrough, 24, and Harold Lloyd, 26, both of Indian-

apolis. Warden Dowd said Caine, Hansbrough and Lloyd are still confined, and played no part in Parnell’s escape. He said questioning had failed to show any of the inmates load-| ing the truck knew Parnell was hiding in the box of paper. It was the first such escape, he said, since a prisoner rode out of Indiana State Prison grounds on a food truck 13 years ago.
