Waring Made Himself Great

By HENRY BUTLER Fred Waring is a little guy who has made himself great. The achievement, as evidenced by both the program and the audience turnout at the Murat last night, has been

considerable. With far less than first-rate musical endowment, Mr. Waring has contrived to build a style, a show and a legend that have no equal,

He has made himself a model emcee. That has meant throttling down his propensity for ad-lib gags, demonstrated on his last appearance here a couple of seasons ago, when he heckled the late-arriving scribe for another daily. (P. 8.: Scribe was nice, didn’t squawk.) For years he has gathered around him a staff of enormously capable musicians. He has had to learn a lot from them, and I might surmise the learning hasn't always been palatable. ‘If you can flick your time-dial back 20 years or so and rehear what the| Waring Glee Club used to sound! like on, the radio — the insane pauses, the nauseous rubato — you'll be agreeably surprised by current Waring output.

8 ” » FOR THE TWO SHOWS last night Mr. Waring drew two Murat housefuls. Before I arrived for the early show, he already had hypnotized his listeners. They would clap or be silent on_ signal. Niece gimmick, and evidently

gratifying to the Waring personality. The orchestra, the Glee Club, the soloists all struck me as swell. I'm not so happy about the comedy, which has the merit, however, of being less corny than the Spike Jones routine. A major beef of mine is the lack of printed programs. Mr. Waring's soloists should strike for recognition. If word-of-emcee announcement is not enough for a reviewer to remember, what about those kids’ futures? How will they ever be known by name? I liked Morley and Gearhart, the duo-pianists, despite what the Waring-style program made them do. Frank Davis, baritone, struck me as splendid, though typed into cliches. Mr. Waring’s seductive septet (or was it sextet?) of lithe, lissome lasses with velvet voices drew tumultuous applause. » ” ”

BUT MR. WARING himself remains the chief attraction. He is an enigma Sir Edward Elgar might have liked to put into the famous Variations. He im-

go, I think Fred Waring has done more to advance musical taste than any other living American. But there are, times when I

Breedlove Trial Set for Oct. 14

Trial of Willie Breedlove, 32, charged with the 1946 bludgeon slaying of nurse Alberta Green, has been set for Oct. 14 before a

Criminal Court 1 jury. Breedlove was indicted for firstdegree murder by the Grand Jury in May. He was linked to the long unsolved slaying by Patrolman James Pearcy, who traced fingerprints found at the scene to Breedlove. Nurse Green was beat to death Sept. 11, 1946, while on duty in the Rotary Convalescent Home at the Indiana University Medical Center, Breedlove was returned here to] face the charge following his re-|

The suit filed today in Federal Court by Indianapolis & -Southeastern Trailways, Inc., contends the union violated its contract. Named as defendant in the suit is Division 1211 of Amalgamated Association of Street, Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employees of America. The company contends it reached a working > agreement with the union July 5, 1951. It states the contract is still in effect.

Time for Local Police It was roundup time in Indianapolis last night, when police took

time out from catching crooks to| nab two runaway steers and find |

a home for an abandoned horse. Police corraled the two steers and packed them off to Union Stockyards for safekeeping after they were found at Chase and W. Henry Sts. The horse, complete with saddle, was left tied behind Birch’s Drug Store, 2302 Central Ave., by| a youth who had rented it from the Indianapolis Saddle Club.
