He already had been .told by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, GOP presidential nominee, that his place on the Republican ticket hinged on his explanation of how he used the money.
Mr. Nixon's aids said advance copies of the speech would not be available and no one would know what it contained until he addresses the nation at 8:30 p. m. Indianapolis time, in a radio (CBS and MBS) and television (NBC) broadcast.
There was a flurry of conflicting reports last night, however, on what Mr. Nixon would say.
Harold Beckley, A U. S. Senate press gallery secretary traveling with Mr, Nixon, told two United Press correspondents Mr. Nixon would quit the race. The report was denied by Mr. Nixon and about an hour or so later by Mr. Beckley. - However, the UP correspondents said he had given the information to them. “Nixon has been thrown to the wolves,” Mr, Beckley told the two newsmen. Shortly after Mr. Beckley "vas quoted, ‘Mr. Nixon's press secretary, James Bassett, said: “I will not deny or confirm any report concerning Sen. Nixon's intentions. All I will say now is this: you will have to wait for Sen, Nixon's talk to learn his intentions.” The UP correspondents said Mr. Beckley told them the decision to drop Nixon already had been
Eisenhower directly. Newsmen could not reach Mr. Nixon for further questioning as special guards blocked approaches to his hotel rooms,
