Mr. Dale Makes Four Spades

R. DALE realizes how helpful the opponents’ bidding can be — not only in determining the course and extent of his own bidding but in the play of the hand as well. He and his partner reached and made a game in spades although they held only half of the high cards. What

this deficiency?! ‘to Well, they both realize a

Mr. Dale singleton can be good or bad. If

in a suit bid by partner, it's bad. If in a suit bid by the opponents, it’s good. A guarded king is much more valuable if the suit has been bid by the opponent on your right. A king (or any honor) in a suit bid by partner is a wonderful asset. A king in a suit bid on your left is of very doubtful value. And so on. The value pf each of your short suits and high cards depends on what suit it is in.

IN TODAY’S deal Mrs Keen had a singleton in a suit bid by the enemy. She had three cards to a queen in a suit bid by and rebid by her partner. Although she passed on the first round, she had enough to raise after Mr. Dale rebid freely. Mr. Dale had a good six-card guit, supported by partner and a vold in an unbid suit. His king of clubs looked a little

put that card to good use. The opening lead was the ten of hearts which was ducked all around and Mr. Dale won the queen. He saw that if the king of spades was wrong he would have to ruff three clubs in dummy to come up with ten tricks. He couldn't stand a spade lead from, his right so at trick two he led the KING of clubs. Mr. Abel had bid that suit and therefore the odds favored his holding the ace. Mr. Abel won with the ace of clubs and could not return a spade without losing a trick, He led his last heart. Dummy’s seven was covered by the eight and Mr. Dale won with the ace. He was able to ruff three clubs and lost only a club, a heart and a spade.

CHRISTMAS

Paste oN LABEL

Have you started saving a few pennies for your family Christmas gift buying? If not, it is time to consider what you would like to do about a gift for each member of your

family. As you have heard many times before this, the |

amount you pay for a gift does not matter, it is the fact that you give something from your own time. If you plan to make something for Mother or Dad, Sis’ or Brother, you may have to buy a little paint, yarn, cloth, |

know of something you wish to buy which your family has wanted for a long time. If this is the case, save for it now. | Make a little bank to hold your pennies. A sock with a tape loop or even a milk bottle with a coin slot in the bottle cap, and a tag or label pasted on the outside, will serve as a daily reminder. How about slots in a section of bamboo?
