City Nurses Help Protect Health Of 74,000 Pupils Here

FOR A SOUND FUTURE—Nurse Lucille Bauman anc Dr. C. R. Bird this year will help thous-

ands of school pupils through their studies by assuring them sound bodies and minds. At School 12, Paul Hutton gets the routine check.

A “silent service” of 55 women

i stands guard over the health of “9 74,000 Indianapolis children,

They are, the registered nurses

A and staff members of the school

health division, City Health Department. It is their task to block dis-

ease before it becomes epidemic—

to help advise parents, and to as-

2 sure children their chance to ap- “= proach

education with healthy bodies and minds.

Keeping the health of this]

school army at par is a big job. Each nurse is responsible for at least one school building But it pays off —sometimes in lives.

There was the time a youngster thought to have overcome rheumatic fever went for several years without a medical examination. When he entered school a doctor noted a heart murmur. More

tests brought orders for complete “bedrest.” He eventually

recovered enough for full time schooling:

An attending physician pointed out death might have struck had the boy continued his %active school life without the treatment. There are times when the school nurse must probe deep to find answers to problems. Oné time physicians could not diagnose the trouble of the little girl who became “411” and visited the* nurse regularly.

A long investigation disclosed

A POUND HELPS ~Height and weight proportion is a good

health barometer. Lloyd Murrell at School 12 has his recorded

by Nurse Bauman,

the child’s mother had died. The nurse resembled her and the child visited her for that reason.. Between. visits grief upset her. Special attention by the nurse soon Fput the ‘child on the road to normal life. One of the biggest problems facing the nurses is the fight against ungrounded fear of disease — especially where polio is concerned. Actually, the polio infection rate compared to population has been

low. Measles and other so-called “childhood” diseases cause the most trouble. Long before classroom doors open each fall nurses and the Par-ent-Teacher Association go to work. , Their task is to get as many children as possible ex-

made before the school bell rings. Health records are kept for every public and parochial school pupil on file until the child reaches 21.
