§ John Brown of Herron Sees Life's Contrasts
By HENRY BUTLER JOHN E. BROWN, the new ] education man on the Herron | Art Museum curator staff, i
has a whopping wide view of education and art, He sees the two fields as not : Ee Just inter-related, but practically ty identical. ! At first glance, this breadth of outlook might seem reminiscent of crackpot pamphlets on the Magic Key to the Universe. Actually, however, Mr. Brown has sound historical backing, from the ancient Greeks on up to 19th and 20th century theorizers. Tha life, the arts, the people of a given era all are interwoven fn a pattern. People affect art. Art atiects people, even guiding their behavior. “Certainly the Victorian factory building was an i, expression of 19th century atti- gu tudes .towards labor,” Mr. Brown observes. The appalling contrast between, say, an 1850 textile mill in Lowell, Mass., and any of our i big new plants on Shadeland Ave., would sustain his point. | 2 un » BESIDES, he comes here from a two-and-a-half year tour of duty cluded with the Cleveland Museum, which pt, has an altogether fabulous edueational program. Museum and Cleveland schools overlay and as-
sist each other in art and appre-ij,4" Museum and editor of the ciation classes. What's more, the
