Every Hour;
Adlai Cuts Down Quips
By CHARLES LUCEY Scripps-Howard Staff Writer ABOARD EISENHOWER TRAIN, Sept. 19 — A look at| Dwight Eisenhower, the man and
tours through the Midwest: More than a million persons have cheered him this week at trainside, in parades and in court house squares. He would have made it two million if he could have, He wants to see and be seen by the ' greatest possible number of Americans between now and Nov. 4. Traditionally, campaign trains - have scheduled “slowdowns” at small country places so the candidate can get out on the rear platform and give the folks a| friendly wave as he passes, The theory was that, with time limited, not much could be invested in these little handfuls of people.
Ike thinks otherwise.
“If they're interested. enough to come out,” he tells his staff, “then they're going to ‘hear me.”
Whistle Isn’t Enough
So places marked for slow. downs are called “greeting stops” | aboard this train.
The schedule planners are giv-/enson declares, “I do not have to ing five minutes to’ these greeting stops. But Gen. Eisenhower press my respect for them. Nor|
won't hold to it—he'll go eight or nine ‘minutes. At larger places,
he's likely to stretch his sched-|
uled 15 minutes to 20. Ike is beginning to get some ‘of the instinctive feel of politics] any successful practitioner must have. It wasn’t some obscure brain‘truster who decided to challenge ‘the Adlai Stevenson pun-and-pat-tern approach to the Présidency. That came from Ike himself. Some of his advisers think that, properly exploited, it could be an extremely important tactic.
‘Miracle of Energy
There’s no busier man in America than Dwight Eisenhower. It's
not just the 16-hour day-—it's|
what he does with each hour. At every stop, he’s on the platform. The minute he finishes talking, he goes to a reception car to greet local politicians who ride ‘to the next stop, When he finishes swapping hellos and a friendly story or two with. them, he hurries back to his own ¢ar, where he goes over what he intends to say at the next whistle-stop. He has speechwriters along, of course. Sometimes he ignores what they've written for him. Good or bad, by the time he drops those little homilies off that rear platform, they're authentic unpolished Eisenhower. But sentence-polishers are relatively few among America’s 155 ‘millions, Maybe Ike knows what he’s doing. . Some of the GOP candidate's advisers observe his trademark ‘has been that of a man of honor and integrity in whom ' millions of Americans—because of his great past record—have confidence.

But in other cases, it said, they seize Russians indiscriminately merely to meet increasing orders for forced labor. Ordinary criminals, who make vp only a small percentage of the slave worker ranks, are given the best jobs and even allowed “to dominate or terrorize the other prisoners,” the report said, while political offenders get the worst treatment.
