8 Ex-Bankers

Are-Sentenced

Two former employees of People’s State Bank, charged with Juggling records to cover bad loans, will start serving two-year federal prison sentences Oct. 1. Federal Judge William E. Steckler yesterday sentenced James E. Walpole, 27, of 959 High St., and Evans’ M, Rust, 42, of 1320 N. Delaware St. Both pleaded guilty to the charges. : An’ FBI agent testified shortages attributed to accounts of the pair totaled more than $79,000. Shortages in Walpole's account reached more than $15,000. Rust's were short about $64,000.

Tell of Loan Papers

Both the agent and District Attorney Marshall Hanley told the court the men made out fictitious loan papers in attempts to hide bad accounts. Each defendant was given until Oct. 1 to get his personal affairs in order, Although Walpole said he had nothing to say in addition to his statement “to probation officers, the FBI agent quoted him as declaring he started juggling the books to “cover up for a friend.” But the agent said that “friend” cannot be found. Rust told the court:

“Whatever happened I had no|

Intent to do wrong to anybody. But I just couldn’t face the criticism I was subject to.” He referred to some of the loans he had made. Investigators said Rust had been juggling the records for the last 10 years. Walpole had been at it two years. Each knew what the other was doing. Although the figures ran high on the accumulated fictitious notes, not all the money was lost by the bank, Money “loaned” on the fictitious notes was used to make payment on legitimate ones which became delinquent. Some of the notes were later brought up to date.

2 Boatmen Break

Robert E. Lee Record

8T. LOUIS — Two boatmen rested today after an 88-hour and 10-minute trip up the Mississippi River from New Orleans in which they fulfilled their desire to beat the historic record of the steamboat Robert E. “ee. The Lee's 82-year-old record, which still stands for steamboats, was 90 hours and 14 minutes for the 1047-mile trip. Roy Smith and John Langford used a 14-foot plywood boat, powered by two 10-horsepower outboard motors.
