Of all things, down at the barber shop we found Uncle Ef—{h boss er complaining. about his own high prices for haircuts. He said children were how apparently getting their hair cut at home. The grownups are letting their hair grow longer and he is left with more gossip time than he can afford.

Miss Brash Uses Clubs To Pull Qut of Tight Spot

Y# should be in a game when you and your partner hold 65 per cent of the high cards. You can do with a little less if you have distributional advantages in the way of long solid suits, plenty of trumps, singletons or voids. Good interme - diates make a difference, too ~—cards like 10s, nines and eights. The above applies to suit contracts. At no trump, there are only two of these “plus values” avail« able—long (five cards or more) solid suits and good intermediates.

In today’s deal, the solidity of the club suit, plus good intermediate cards influenced Mr. Champion to go on to game at no trump ‘even though he suspected that he and his partner were somewhat short of the required 65 per cent of the high cards. ® s o ” THERE WAS also the fact that the king of spades assumed almost the value of a full trick after Miss Brash bid two no trump, inferring some spade strength.

Mr. Abel opened the trey of spades and dummy’s king won. Looking the situation over, Miss Brash saw that she had. only six immediate high card winners—three in spades, one in hearts and two in diamonds. She had three five-card suits in her hand and dummy. She

needed to set up one of them to develop the necessary three additional winners. - } Which one should she start to work on? She chose clubs and she was quite correct. Usually in this situation, it is best to go after the suit in which you do not have the top cards.

PLAYING CLUBS, Miss Brash was ond jump ahead of

the enemy and their spade suit; |

After knocking out both opposing club honors, she still had a spade stopper and thus won three clubs, three spades, two diamonds and a heart. Note that if she had elected to set diamonds by giving up one trick in that suit, she could have developed four diamond tricks. But still she would have had only eight tricks in all.
