Uncle Sam ‘Corrects’ Carvey On Rent Money Paid Butler
Says Figures | By Candidate A ‘Mistake’ |
Uncle Sam said today John Carvey “apparently was mistaken” when he said the Army is paying Butler University $42,000 a year rent for basement space. Frank J. Dietz, realty officer of the General Services Administration, said the government pays a little less than $20,000 a year rent for basement space at Butler. Mr: Carvey, Democratic candidate for Congress, in one of two Statements yesterday, charged “the Army is paying Butler Uni-| versity $42,000 a year rent for basement space that isn’t worth a dime.” ' Rents Other Space Mr. Dietz noted that the gov-

.. In his other statement, Mr. Carvey attacked Eugene Pulliam, publisher of the News and the Star. He said: | “Pulliam reaches out to control every vital process in Marion County. ‘He scorns the idea that a newspaper has a public responsibility of presenting the news fairly, accurately and detachedly. Two Gunmen Rob Station Attendant
A pair of youthful gunmen took $127 from a Northwest Side filling station attendant early today and fled after forcing their victim info a washroom. Charles Smallwood, 32, of 2015 W. New York, told police the gunmen forced him to open the safe at the filling station, 2001 Lafayette Rd., and give them the $125 it contained. They also obtained $2 from his billfold, Mr. Smallwood reported. As they left, Mr. Smallwood said, the men forced him into the washroom and threatened to
shoot Jim if he left before they made their escape. In a strong-arm robbery last night, Alton Durr, 22, of 1125 Vandeman St, lost $5 to three men who slugged and beat him, he told police. Mr. Durr said he was walking in the 500-block of Blake St.
{when he was attacked.
Cmdr. Kurtz said the Navy has converted 1800 planes to drones, but he said that not all of them were equipped with television, which is used to guide the robots to their targets.. Television Eyes
{ The guided missile I saw was perched on the deck of the Boxer, ready to destroy a Communist target within an hour. Push buttons and television were going to aim it. The missile was a World War 11 Grumman Hellcat with television eyes and a 2000-pound bomb. It had no pilot. X We watched a red-haired crew{men warm up the Hellcat’s (engine, taxi it to the catapult and leave the cockpit minutes before the launch. Then the robot “Kamikaze” streaked into space, climbing leftward to join its mother plane. { There was silence on the deck. | Then a murmur of awe spread through the crew members, many of them veterans of two wars fought with /weapons "requiring men to risk their -lives. Soucek let his binoculars (rest on his chest when the planes were out of sight and said, “This is really something.” A crewman who had helped roll the missile onto the elevator between decks said what many of us were thinking: “What's the next war going to be like?”
, ‘Nice Way to Fight’
The men in charge of the guided missile program on the Boxer tracked the two planes as they headed northeastward. Crewmen were tense even after the drone became airborne. But all were out on deck watching. This was the payoff for hun-
