Sports Roundup---

By EDDIE ASH :

Stu Holcomb to Scout Purdue's Opening Foe

PURDUE'S football team has had such rugged open ing game opponents the last five years that Coach Stu Holcomb has not had the pleasure of enjoying the thrill of victory in an inaugural since he took over the Boilermakers. No. 1 in the new campaign is coming up, Purdue at Penn State, Sept. 27 . . . Stu's gladiators will be favored to latch on to that one . .. The Boilermakers bowled over the Nittany Lions at Lafayette last fall, 28-0. Starting his sixth yeor as the chief grid mentor at West Lafayette, Holcomb is determined to win the lid-lifter this trip . . . So he'll do his own scouting and look in on Penn State this Saturday when the Lions shove off against Temple at State College, Pa. 4 The middle of Purdue's schedule is unusually rough, Notre Dame, Illinois and Michigan State on successive Saturdays, 15 days, Oct. 18, 25, Nov. 1.

8 » ” ” o - . THE MONON is going to operate a football special out of Louisville, Oct. 4, sponsored by the Derbytown Indiana University Club . . . The occasion is the Towa at

Indiana game, which will mark Bernie Crimmins’ home *

debut as head grid coach at Bloomington . . . He is a native of Louisville. The train already has been named the Crimmins Special . . . Here's hoping the Fightin’ Hoosiers are right at their peak for that one to give the Kentuckians a rousing show for their loyalty.

» - ” ” ” ” . The Notre Dame at Texas gridiron clash on Oct. 4 is a ““double sellout” . . . Not only have all game tickets been sold, according to reports from Austin, but all hotel space in the area for that football week end has been gobbled up . . . Late comers seeking housing reservations are being advised to try their luck at hotels and motels elsewhere . . . San Antonio will accommodate part of the overflow.

» » » 8 » vy ON THE morning of July 23 the Cleveland Indians were buried “prematurely” . . . They trailed the Yankees by 71% games . . . Working out of the grave, for a new lease on life, since that date Al Lopez’ team has won 37 games and lost 18, with the Yankees winning 32 and dropping 23. Manager Lopez has sound reasons to shout, “We're not out of it. The ‘boys recovered in stride from last Sunday’s costly defeat. Now it's the Yankees’ turn to run into trouble. Their remaining schedule is far rougher to handle than Cleveland's.” $

» ” . Lopez has. Indianapolis pulling for him . . . In three seasons at Victory Field the Senor’s hunches usually paid off . . . He could be right again anent something unforeseen lurking in the Yankees’ path . . . something on the order of the “old whammy,” maybe, to be supplied by the Athletics (six games), and the Red Sox (three games).

” * GEORGE TRAUTMAN, president of all the minor baseball leagues, announced he will use the influence of his office to locate a new club to place in Toledo next year, if Toledo insists on a replacement for the franchise it
