Lewis Splits Coal Operator Ranks

By United Press WASHINGTON, Sept. 18 (UP) —John L. Lewis today split the ranks of soft coal operators, put apparently not enough to win a peace agreement on his own terms and avert a major strike. | As a result, some 200,000 Northern soft coal miners are expected tor strike at midnight Sunday, halting production of 48 per cent jof industry's basic fuel. The INorthern miners are due to be followed 10 days later by 100,000 diggers in Southern pits. | Informed sources reportgd that {a “number” of major coal companies in Illinois were ready to imake peace with Mr. Lewis in order to avoid being shut down. | These companies were said to ibe dropping out of the Illinois Opjerators’ Association, a part of the |Bituminous Coal Operators’ As{sociation now bargaining with Mr. Lewis. | Mr. Lewis has threatened to strike only against association] members, leaving non-members| free to operate if they agree to| accept terms of the contract] | which is finally signed with the {operator organizations. While the Ilgnois operators

would be affected by the strike, | the official said.
