'It's a Pleasure to Play Against You, Muzzy’

IXTY-FIVE per ‘cent of the high cards will produce a good play for game at no trump or at a major suit. It means 5%; honor tricks, 28 points in the Work count, 17 points in the four Aces count. While game at a major requires one more trick than game at no trump, a good trump suit in a partnership will almost always produce that needed extra trick. Mr. Dale and Mr. Muzzy had the required high cards in to~ day's deal and reached the obvious spade game. Mr. Abel led the jack of diamonds, dummy's queen was put up and Mr, Champion played the king. [I FJ

AS USUAL, Mr. Muzzy's mind was out in left field. He meant to win with the ace, but somehow got hold of the six spot and played it. When he saw his “error” he grabbed for his card but Mr. Champien had picked up the trick which, of course, was rightfully his, “It's ‘a pleasure to play against you, Muzzy,” said Mr, Champion, grinning wickedly.

His statement was true, in general. But this time he would have fared better if Mr. Muzzy had been permitted to win the first trick.

Mr. Champion returned a diamond at trick two and this

took three rounds of trumps, ending in his hand. He then led the jack of clubs and let it ride. % o s » MR. CHAMPION won with the king and as you see the only winner he could cash was the ace of hearts. Thus Mr. Muzzy made his contract, “losing only a diamond, a club and a heart. Note that if he had won the first diamond trick, he would have had no chance against reasonably good defense. When the club finesse lost, Mr. Champion could have reached his partner's hand with a diamond lead and a heart return through dummy’'s king would have developed the necessary number of tricks for the defenders.

One little slip and a whole week’s work can be ruined if a link cracks. | Start with a block of soft wood about 114 inches square, | and mark off long lines as shown, so that the end of the block looks like a cross, as shown above: Then, whittle away the corners to make an elongated cross the length of the
