QUPDENLY it's fall. Your calendar is filled with luncheons, teas, fashion snows, dinners and evening engagements, Somehow the clothes you remembered as he-
ing very. chic last jyear look less crisp, less exciting now.
80 now is the time to go on a shopping spree. But use your head-—plan before you buy. If you swoon at the sight of a pretty hat, resist buying it until you are sure it will go with the dress or suit you plan to
buy. It must “go” both in mood and color. The same Joes for shoes,
bags and gloves. Experience will teach you it is best to start with a basic dress, suit or suitdress. The price makes little difference. It can be uhder $20 or over $100. You will fin clothes with good lines in al price and size ranges. ” ~ »
THE FOUR ensembles photographed are typical. There is great variety in the prices, yet each has its special charm. All four are “basic” enough to be worn with a variety of accessories and to fit a variety of occagions,
With simple tailored hats, thev go to town or luncheon, With a more exciting hat they are ready for tea, cocktails, dinner or even dancing. If you are on a budget, simplicity is the keynote to smartness. One wellchosen outfit worn often is better than a conglomeration of hats, clothes and accessories
Tinrelated and worn indiscrimi-
nately.
Dallas Awards
Style Oscars
DALLAS, Sept. 13—-Dallas awarded four of its annual “Oscars” of fashion this week and showed an international audience 10 “prophetic” fashions of 1953. The season's fashion prophecy -transformed into fabric from the drawing boards of the designers of America, France and Italy—ranged from the “waltz length” dress for evening to the “emphatic glove.” But this was certain as 50 models paraded for almost two hours the new collections of Traina-Norell, Adrian, Trigere, Carnegie, Blotta, Dior, Fath, Balenciaga, Schiaparelli, Veneziani and Battilocchi and many more: There was hardly a waist“line or a strand of hairdress to be seen.
The 10 “prophetic fashions”... “were outlined as the “elongated
waistline,” the-sweater coat, the “great stole,” the mobile hat, the emphatic glove, the replete back, the tubular coat, the fluid look of silk jersey, the shoulder warmer and the narrow look at night. Most impressive were the bulky, unusual fabrics, such as a strapless, molded short formal of camel's hair and cocktail dresses in tweed.

Queen Mary
Paces Style
When we think of Dowager Queen Mary, our reflex is to think of hats. As a matter of fact this beloved, stately lady is responsible for setting one of the greatest long-range fash-
jons in history, the ,vogue for |
the soft silk crepe dress.
When she was Princess of |
Wales at the turn of the cen-
tury,-.Queen Mary helped. to
usher in a new willowy, supple, uncorseted mode in which silk crepe de chine and chiffon replaced the stiff stand-alone silks of Queen Alexandra's reign, We didn'® call it the “little black dress” until 20 years later, but we've been loving the little silk dress off and on (mostly on) ever since.
n ” = THIS year, when the Dowager Queen's granddaughter has assumed the mantle of sovereign, the crepe dress will certainly be absolute monarch again. Every top designer in New York and Paris has turned from stiffness to softness in the daytime silhouet and the unassuming elegant little black is once again the cornerstone of smart wardrobes every-
