Bad Boy Mario Lanza Mixes Up His Music

MARIO LANZA, who would be star of his own Friday night show on WIRE if he'd

only co-operate a little more

with his movie studio, believes opera lovers should start listening to jazz and jazz cultists should bend an ear to the long hair stuff. “I get disgusted with the fanatics on both sides, who can’t appreciate anything but their own narrow field,” says Mario. ‘“Whichever side they're on, they're missing a lot of good music.” This is the reason, Lanza indicated, why he uses such a wide variety of songs on his show— when he’s on it. al ” n “lI LIKE to relax after dinner with phonograph records,” adds the tenor. star, “and people who drop in are sometimes surprised to find me listening to Duke Ellington, Frankie Lane, Lena Horne and Bing Crosby. I. don't see anything illogical in this. The next night they're likely to find me listening to Beethoven, Sibelius or Caruso.” Actually, Lanza points out, there is often a close relationship between some of the socalled “progressive jazz” and symphonic works written hundreds of years ago. “I've heard jazz that sounded very similar to a Bach fugue,” says Mario, “and, of course, many of our popular Tin Pan Alley tunes are adapted from the classics,”

his earthy corn to some 7 million

listeners in the U. 8. and Canada, who take to him like a second cup of coffee at breakfast.

The 45-year-old emcee of the audience participation variety show went on the air with it in June, 1933. That was less than three years after he had been fired from a radio job because he had “no future in radio.” . For more than a decade, he was uncontested champion to the title of the folksiest, likeablest, home-loving husband type on the air. Now, according to listener polls, Arthur Godfrey has snatched the title away from him, even though Don McNeill still claims at least 7 million fans.

"_ ONE of the big reasons Me-

Neill and his early morning show have stayed on the air so long is his close contact with his au-
