Blackwood on Bridge—

Bidder in Toug By Opponent's Fumbling Play

IT TOOK fantastically good luck, excellent dummy play, and horrible defense by Mr. Muzzy to bring home today’s contract.

" . When Miss Brash reached

four spades, Mr. Muzzy doubled in authoritative tones. He not only failed to beat it, but he also had to live with the fact that his side could have made five diamonds. Several times, Miss Brash's hand was on the verge of falling completely apart. Each time Mr. Muzzy helped her out by somehow managing to got his hand on the wrong card. ww 85 THE OPENING lead was the king of diamonds, followed by the queen of that suit, which Miss Brash ruffed with the

cashed and the play of the 10 spot by Mr. Meek was carefully noted. Next came the king of clubs and Mr, Muzzy promptly won with the ace. If he had laid off this trick, Miss Brash’'s hand would have been practically ruined because the only way she could get back to her hand after trumps were out, was in the club suit itself, There was an. awful wait

while Mr. Muzzy considered

his next play. The return of the jack of clubs at this point also would have been fatal to Miss Brash. - . » BUT AFTER long thought, out came the ace of hearts, followed by the king. Miss Brash ruffed the second heart with

deuce of spades and finessed dummy’s seven. The jack and nine of spades then picked up Mr, Muzzy’s last two trumps. Miss Brash now had nothing left but good clubs and, thanks to Mr. Muzzy, there was a club on the board to lead to her queen. When the hand was over, Mr. Heinsite mopped his brow nervously. “Think what would have happened if the hand had broken badly,” he said. “You think about that,” Miss Brash replied. “I prefer to think about the fine doubled contract Mr, Muzzy and I just made.” :
