FBI's Work With Local Groups Is Vital |
Crime is increasing In. the United States. The FBI is combatting that increase. In a series of four articles based on talks with FBI officials, the United Press tells how the famous law enforcement agency is going, about it.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 —FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover said today a continuing alliance of local,
state and federal law-enforce-ment agencies is necessary to combat a “disturbing” upward crime trend. Mr. Hoover warned that national crime statistics — now being assembled for the first six months of this year—show a continuing increase, “The public is becoming increasingly aware of the huge toll levied by crime in the United States and looks to the nation’s law-enforcement agencies for militant action,” the FBI director said.

MR. HOOVER restated his conviction that the crime problem does not require establishment of a national police force “which is characteristic of the totalitarian dictatorships.” The FBI director made the statement for the United Press as aids told how the FBI— which made its reputation in the 1930s—has stepped up its own campaign against its old underworld enemies. The FBI's most recent uniform reports outline the crime problem. More recent local reports underline it.
In April the FBI reported a 5.1 nationwide increase in crime last year. The previous year had shown an increase, too, 1.5 per -cent. New York City officials recently explained that | new statistical methods were responsible for a sharp increase
