Blackwood on Bridge—

Personalities of Players Important Factor in Game

HEN YOU PLAY bridge you are playing with 52 pieces of cardboard — inanimate objects with no sense, no _ personality. You are also play“ing with three peoplé" who have distinct personalities And believe me, the latter factor is more important than the first. Show Mr Dale's hand to the best bridge player you know, Ask him what he would Mr. Dale bid after his partner’s raise to two spades. You'll find out how good he really is. If he says three spades, mark him as a mechanical player. If he says four spades, do the game. If he asks “who is my partner?” then he is probably as good as you think he is.

IF MISS BRASH had been sitting across the table from him, Mr. Dale would have rebid three spades. If a player as extremely aggressive as Miss Brash chose to pass, the odds against a game were overwhelming. With Mrs. Keen as a partner, he would have tried to gauge how good the defense might be. Against the best defenders he would bid three spades. Against Mr. Muzzy and Mr. New he would bid four.

But an expert on bridge “humanics” would have no doubt as to the proper action with Mr. Meek as a partner. Without question, Mr. Meek would have everything his single raise promised and prob-

ably a little more. The rebid was four spades, automatically.

” ”n » MRS. KEEN opened the jack of hearts and Mr. Dale won in his own hand. At trick two he led a spade to the king—the standard safety play to protect against the possibility of all four outstanding spades being in Mr. Abel's hand. : A small spade was returned to the ace, clearing the suit. Now, Mr. Dale saw that he was all right if Mr. Abel held the ace of diamonds. But on the

didn’t count on that. : He entered dummy with the ace of hearts and led back a small club. When Mr. Abel played low, he put in the ten. Mrs. Keen won with the queen and made her best return, the nine of clubs. When the club suit broke 3-3, Mr. Dale got rid of a diamond on _dummy’s fourth club. Thus he lost only two diamonds and a club.
