Some People Rode
The Big Nickel ride chugged up 312,000 passenger miles on its
several years. Five of the eight winners in the first day’s saddle horse race were doped with strychnine. Judges took away their purses.
There also was a little gambling, a little bootlegging dnd a
little hip-swinging, but surprisingly little for a city the size of the Fair.
Some Novelties
A few things were new, Mostly they were historical exhibits showing 100 years of prog-
ress on farm, in horfle and with machinery. Another addition was
the “Hollywood at the Fair” tent, with movie costumes and several stars. Most of the Fair, if not old, was pretty much the same, But they
were the exhibits and shows and concessions which have proven
swing around the Fairgrounds. Nobody will ever know how many miles were walked. Indianapolis Railways carried 78,000 passengers to the Fair and 87,000 back downtown. Transit officials don’t know exactly why 9000 more riders returned from the Fair than went to it. And children, following the Fair like it was the Pied Piper, strayed from their parents 307 times. Biggest day for lost children was Sunday, with 68. One boy, 3, was lost twice in the same day.
Raccoons Dined Well
The peanut vendor at the Conservation Building sold 600 bags of goobers, most of which was fed to the ‘caged raccoons, And farmers used about 260 tons of hay to_bed down their livestock—and often themselves. Now if someone wants Sovola-
and porpoises may have used sonar, location of objects by submarine sound echoes, long before it was developed by man for war use, Drs. W. N. Kellogg and Robert Kohler of the Florida State University’s oceanographic institute have tested the hearing of porpoises and find they can hear sounds approximately 30,000 cycles per second beyond the range of human ears. They may also produce ultrasonic vibrations that allow them to navigate at night and in murky water, as they are known to do, by bouncing ultrasonic echoes off obstructions.
