Churchill on the Skids |
In Working
By WILLIAM McGAFFIN LONDON, Sept. #4
Attlee Labor government last Oct. 25. It was a tough, dangerous spot. Now .the country's position is much’ less precarious—but the individual ‘Englishman is so disillusioned with Churchill he would turn the old man out of office if an election were risked tomorrow. This is no surprise. Churchill had the guts to do some things he knew would make him unpopular—such as reducing the food subsidies, It helped the government toward making ends meet when the subsidy was reduced by $448 million to $700 million, But it meant the people had to pay higher prices for their meat,

would give him its blessing. May Not Wait
But, unfortunately for Churchill and his government, the work-| ers may not wait that long. Eight million of them want wage bodsts to meet the rising cost of living. The government is trying to get
them to abide by the wages they/, are making now. The annual con-|¢ ference of the Trades Union Con-'ihe International Mon gress, representative of all these —....

Jenner Blasts Foreign Aid -
Says Taxes Prevent 30-Hour Week
Times State Service SOUTH BEND, Sept. 4—Ben.! William E. Jenner said here today a 30-hour work week would be possible for everyone without! raising wages or prices “if only the money squandered for use-! less government programs were not collected.” The Indiana Republican declared: “When you consider that more than one of every four dollars! the worker earns is now seized by the federal government in taxes, then you understand that [ats than 10 hours of every 40-) week are going to the Wash-/ ington tyrrany. }
‘A Swindler’
Sen. Jenner, attacking the na-| tion's foreign aid program as a “swindle,” also said: “Under this insidious Point 4! scheme of Dean Acheson and President Truman, the United States send experts to foreiom countries to teach them our manfacturing, farming and distribution techniques and secrets.
“Not only does the American taxpayer finance this sharing of American know-how. The American taxpayer also finances the billions of dollars of giveaways with which foreign countries manufacture products to compete with American-made products not only on the world market but right here in the United States.” A candidate for re-election, Sen. Jenner is opposed by Democrat Henry Schricker. The Senator issued today’s statement as his campaign caravan arrived in this industrial city. |
Installment Plan
Funerals Approved
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Articles of incorporation for a Pittsburgh firm to sell funeral services on the installment plan were approved yesterday. The Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association bitterly opposed official recognition of the firm, the American Memorial Service, Inc., as presaging the ap. plication of “high-pressure tactics to a sacred performance.” The firm plans to offer a oneprice funeral for $405, payable on installment terms in advance.

Asserts Americans
By Science Service WASHINGTON -— Americans prefer music they judge to be masculine, especially when they know others think that the music is fit for he-men. Both sexes consistently prefer masculine music, Dr. Carl H. Rittenhouse, psychologist at Lowry Alr Force Base, Denver, Colo. told the American Psychological Association today.
