Only One UN Plane Lost in Sky Battles

SEOUL, Korea, Sept. 4 (¥P)— Allied Sabrejet pilots shot down 12 Communist MIGs and damaged three others in battles over| North Korea today. One Sabrejet was lost. The pilot reported he was bailing out, beause his instruments were not working, his plane was damaged

and he had no more fuel. The 5th Air Force did not disclose the

pilot's name.

Not a Record The air battles took place between the Yalu and the Chong-| chong Rivers of northwest Korea, known as “MIG Alley.” Today's bag, although one of] the highest’ of the war, was not a| record. i The MIG battles followed an attack by American Superfortresses on the big Chosen No. 1 power plant in northwest Korea. The attack, carried out despite an overcast, was aimed at preventing the Reds from repairing the installation.

Talks Recess

The Superforts aimed their] bombs by radar. Crews were not | able to. observe results, Reconnaissance planes had reported the Communists were trying to repair damage from raids by 222 Navy planes Aug. 27 and 17 B-29s Aug. 30. On the ground, the Reds continued probing attacks around Bunker Hill and on the eastern front. Meanwhile, at Panmunjom, truce talks were recessed for another week after a brief, bitter debate today in which the United Nations charged the Communists don’t really want an armistice.
