By WILLIAM H. STONEMAN * CHAUMONT, France, Sept. 3 (CDN) — Three squadrons of American P-84 fighter bombers have been ordered to evacuate the new American air base at Chaumont for ‘an estimated six weeks because the S000foot concrete laid by French contractors last winter has

While French engineers patch the runway two of the jet squad rons will operate from an air base at Furstenfeldbruck, Germany. The third will practice aerial gunnery at the 12th Air Force range near Tripoli. The squadrons concerned belong to the 48th Fighter Bomber Wing, crack outfit commanded by Col, Joe Moore, first man to knock down a Zero In World War 11. The 48th is' the only American fighter bomber wing stationed in France. This means only four of nine American squadrons belonging to the ' three ‘American wings in France will be operating from Frerich bases in the near future.

French Responsible

Runways and dispersal areas and other -basic installations at’ airdromes assigned to the United States are the responsibility of the French government. General slowness and sloppiness of construction is the impression given by a quick tour of the three bases now being occupied by the USAF in France.» Probably the most backward of all is the base at Iaon-Couvron, about 100 miles north of Paris, where the 126th Light Bombardment Wing has been since midsummer. The setup here is nof much better than it was at Merignac Airdrome near Bordeaux where the 126th arrived in November, 1951. The main 8000-foot runway and! the main taxiway have been fin-| ished for several months. But officers and men still are living in| a tent town and will continue to do so this winter. No work has been done on permanent buildings supposed to form part of the base. They are now going to concen-| trate on “winterizing” the tents. | The dispersal areas are about] half finished but “we hope they

will be ready in October.” i

Live In Tents

The whole outfit is living in a tent town but it is neater and better arranged than the placé at Couvron. The airdrome at Chaumont is by far the best advanced of all though, here too, officers and men are all still living in tents. It is not quite clear just ‘when work will begin on the permanent camp but a fair number of wooden and
