Gl Finally Talks to Girl After 2200-Mile Hunt
By United Press : NEW YORK, Sept. 3—A New
York switchboard operator got her number this morning and talked with a Korea-hound sergeant at Camp Le Jeune, N.C, who had=trfed unsuccessfully tor find Her in a 2200-mile search over the Labor Day week end.
Blue-eyed Patricia Hayes, 20, had put through call after call yesterday in an-attempt to reach Master Sgt. Hugh E. Kidd, who said he wanted to marry her but couldn't find her. “He was all excited when we talked this morning,” she said. “He hopes to get another furlough to come up and see me.” But she said the hadn’t popped the question. yet. And if he does? ‘I don’t know what I'll say,” Miss Hayes said shyly. i Sgt. Kidd drove from Camp Le Jeune to New York and Boston and back trying to locate Miss Hayes. He tried to telephone all the 542 Hayeses in the Boston
‘area and got the wrong number
every time. 40 Miles Away He didn't know that Miss
Hayes was spending the week end with friends at a cottage at’ Lawrence Harbor, N.J. only. 40 miles from New York . “I do wish he'd come back,” Miss Hayes said. “I'm so sorry I missed him. I didn't know he was coming.” She would like to see the sergeant before he leaves for Korea, but she doesn’t want to give an answer to his ‘proposal right away. She wants to wait until he comes home in another year. Mr. Kidd drove to New York Saturday to visit Miss Hayes at her home in The Bronx, He found her apartment empty, and neighbors said they thought she was visiting her brother in Boston. | He drove to Boston and spent the = week-end tracking down people named Hayes. None of them knew his girl friend. ‘See You in a Year On Monday, with his 72-hour! pass nearly expired, he returned to New York and left a note for Miss Hayes: 3 “Goodbye and God bless you. | I'll see you in a year or so or! never.” { When: Miss Hayes returned from the seashore, she immedi-| ately started trying to telephone
“They kept telling me they couldn't get me a line to the camp,” she said. “Then finally we'd get through to the camp and they'd say he was out on the rifle range or some place else.” Last night she finally gave up and sent Sgt. Kidd a telegram. “TI guess I'll just have to wait another year,” she said.
