How You Can Ruin Gutter Without Work

By HUBBARD COBB One of the best ways to ruin a get of roof gutters is to let the gutters fill up with leaves and other debris, Aside from helping to corrode or rot the gutters, the weight of all this mess may pull them loose. Another point is that when the gutters are full of junk, the water spills over the side of the gutter and stains the house siding and causes paint to peel and blister, In short, gutters should he kept clean all year around; Now there are good ways and bad ways to kill time but standing up on a ladder sweeping out gutters is, in our opinion, a miserable way to spend an afternoon. What we suggest vou do is fix up something so that gutters won't collect trash, One way to do this is to get a piece of insect screening, roll it up

lengthwise and place it in the gutter. The screening should exténd a few inches above the top of the gutter. With this arrangement, leaves..falling around the gutters will be caught by the screening and will*blow away the first time there is a decent breeze, If you prefer, you can get readymade gutter screens at building and hardware stores and all you have to do with these is to slip them into the gutters. O course, the gutters should still get a good hosing out every few months be-

Smooth Finish

The man who just left as you came in told us that the reason the sky 1s blue is because of all the dust in the air. He also claims dust is the reason for those beautiful sunsets. Well, maybe he knows what he's talking about and maybe he doesn’t. Our point is that with all that dust in the air to begin with, you don’t want any man-made dust floating around when you start refinishing furniture with shellac, varnish or lacquer. Now it stands to reason that when you coat a piece of furni-| ture with something that becomes gooey: when it's wet, like shellac, varnish and lacquer, and then kick up a lot of dust, the dust is going to settle on the wet finish and get stuck. When the finish is hard the dust is going to he there too and it's going to make the finish rough and pitted. We say, don't try refinishing good furniture in the same room where you do dust-making jobs like sawing wood or where dust is almost sure to be around such as the basement, etc. Also, don’t try sweeping just before you refinish because the dust will be all over the place. If you must sweep, sweep a good many hours
