Opener in Second Suit Avoids Forcing Partner
R. MASTERS made an unusual and apparently awkward opening bid—but his best bid in the circumstances. Here was his reasoning for opening a four-card spade suit ahead of a five-carder in hearts: If he opened a heart and partner bid two diamonds (the most likely suit response), his own hand was not strong enough to warrant a twospade bid. That would force partner with, possibly, a weak hand, to go to the three level to express a simple preference for hearts. The three level might be too high. n ~ ~ ON THE OTHER hand, to rebid two hearts and suppress spades entirely might be dangerous, too. Partner might have a four-card spade holding which he would not bid (something like four to the nine) and a game at spades might be missed. Mr. Masters. therefore opened the bidding with a spade so that partner could show a preference between hearts and spades at the two level. These precautions were not necessary on this particular hand- but, of course, they might have been.
The game at hearts was reached in routine fashion. The opening lead of the king of diamonds was won with
dummy’s ace and Mr. Masters counted his tricks. There were five in hearts, one in diamonds and three in spades -a total of nine. There were ten tricks if

spades broks 3-3 but that was unlikely. » ~ » MR. MASTERS found a way to make his contract by taking six tricks in the trump suit, At trick two he ruffed a diamond in his hand. He led to dummy’s nine of hearts and ruffed another diamond with the ten of hearts. He then overtook his queen of hearts with dummy’s king and ruffed the last diamond with his last heart, the ace. y
Dummy was entered with the king of spades and the jack eof hearts picked up the last outstanding trump, Mr, Masters discarding a club. The ace and queen of spades then took the ninth and tenth tricks.
