French Army Game Ends ~ In Disaster
PARIS, Aug. (CDN) — Maneuvers of the BS 24 Infantry Division just ended in the Champagne resulted in theoreti-| cal disaster when a handful of] parachutists who had dropped be-| hind their lines nearly wiped out divisional headquarters. : The 50 paratroopers began oper-| ations by capturing a motorcycle dispatch rider and discovering the location of the divisional head-| quarters. A group of six para-| troopers attacked the headquart-| ers, captured one colonel and nearly caught the divisional commander, Another squad destroyed a group of tanks and some Piper Cub planes and captured two colonels including the] divisional artillery commander.
Wet weather put many of the division's radio sets out of order and communications were so bad| the divisional commander did not| learn of one enemy counterattack | for two hours.
To add to the confusion the | rainproof clothing of the troops began to leak badly under a series of torrential showers and the maneuvers had to be halted on several occasions to allow the boys to dry out and to get some hot food. “ In extentuation of the trouble it
was explained that 30 per cent of the troops were recruits with less
than four months of service. | Military authorities were grati-|
fled to note that only eight men out of the 12,000 taking part in the maneuvers answered sick] call, a sign of ruggedness due to
intensive training.

CHICAGO (UP) — Grover C.| Coil, International Hearing Aid| Association official, predicts the development of a one-piece min-| iature hearing aid which would eliminate the battery case and| transmission cord. \ Coll said use of a tiny “tran-| sistor” will result first in a battery case one-fourth the present size and ultimately make the attachment unnecessary.
Pedestrian Wins FT. WORTH, Tex. (UP)—Sgt. Fred F. Duke swerved his car to avoid a pedestrian and collided with an automobile driven by| Samuel A. Clark. While the two motorists discussed the accident, the pedestrian walked up, hit both in the eye, and left. =
