GOP Ready If Democrats, Nominees Die
By United Press WASHINGTON, Aug. 28—What would happen if Gen. Dwight D.! Eisenhower or Gov, Adlai E. Stevenson, or their vice presidential running mates, should die before the November election? With the principals on both tickets in robust health, such a} contingency seems most unlike-| ly. But the Democrats and Re-| publicans are prepared, after a fashion, to deal with such a situa-| tion. At the close of their conventions, each party adopted a resolution authorizing its national committee to fill any vacancy on| the national ticket. Faced Before Each party has faced this situation once in history. In 1860 the Democratic national convention nominated Stephen A. Douglas for president and Benjamin Fitzpatrick for vice presi- | dent, Mr. Fitzpatrick declined to run after the convention adjourned. The national committee named Herschel V. Johnson of Georgia in his place. (The Republican ticket of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin won the election.) In 1912 the Republicans nomi-| nated William Howard Taft for president and James Sherman as| his running mate. Mr. Sherman| died late in October, barely al week before the election. It was| too late for the national commit-| tee to do anything about it before the popular voting. But it didn’t make any difference.
