Hoosier Profile By Irving Leibowitz

“WELL, whatta ya know. The professor is a »olitician.” . More than one law student doubtless made this observation when Marion County Democrats this’ week picked Nelson Grills, an Indiana University professor, to be county chairman. But the students; faculty. and college ‘officials were no more surprised than Democratic precinct workers all over town. Most of them never even heard of Nelson Grills. “Sure, sure, he's a big brain,” one downtown ward chairman conceded. “But is he a Democrat?” Mr. Grills has been a ‘red hot Democrat’ — his own description—ever since the late Franklin D. Roosevelt defeated Herbert Hoover for President in 1932. Some Hoosier politicians recall Mr. Grills has aided Democrats In political affairs as a speech writer and consultant on legislative matters. But few know anything about him person-

ally. a SH 0b

LOOKING at the slender, rather good looking professor it is hard to imagine him the wartime pilot of a Navy blimp. He looks almost too boyish to be a professor or a blimp pllot. He's 40. Mr. Grills had the dubious distinction of being the pilot of the first U. 8. Navy blimn shot down ny a German submarine, The mishap occurred in. July 1943. It was America's first indication the German subs had been armed with ‘anti-aircraft guns. . Nelson, who says rather facetiously he was not named after England's famed admiral, Lord Nelson, was ‘a lieutenant commander at the time. The blimp was 80 miles off Miami when enemy slugs punctured it. The crew abandoned the downed blimp but Mr. Grills stuck close by for fear, he saya, the sub would pick up secret U. 8. radar equipment. be floated ardund for 20 hours in a life jacket before an American sub-chaser picked him up. . 4

» « ’ ow “wo oo

ONE consolation for Nelson came when the English Navy sunk the submarine trying to sneak back to the German coast, The blimp's two depth charges had damaged the sub and an

English ship finished it off.

Still active in the Nola! Reserve, Mr. Grills did not always have a fo eeling for the Navy. He says he first learned:a t politics and politi-

cal intrigue trying to get a transfer from the "Navy's land-based legal staff to sea duty. He was recently promoted to commander, Despite Mr. Grills’ active sea career, he is a teacher by trade. - He sald the political job Is “perfect research for teaching.” Can politics -and teaching mix? Mr. Grills thinks so. He noted that students interested In politics get the best grades. But the professor isn't interested in the county chalrmanship post-as-a-lifetime career, “I'm a lot more interested in my students providing good government than my doing 1t.” he declared. ‘‘After all one man can do just so much, but the students go out all-over the country.” oo » oO

DURING the 1949 session of the state legislature, Mr. Grills assisted Gov. Schricker with the Democratic legislative program, During this period, a local newspaper published a story about Mr. Grills calling him a “CIO organizer from the Fast.” Mr. Grills denied this at the time, and still does, For a short period, he was attached to the legal staff of the Treasury Department in Washington. He also.has served as legislative consultant for several organizations, including tHe Indiana County Commissioners Association. Mr. Grills, to the dismay of local politicians, has never been a precinct committeeman or ward chairman. He has, however, worked on ward and precinct level during campaigns for Mayor Phillip Bayt and Senate candidate Alex Campbell. He has a fresh approach to politics but still

insists a team can’t win without everybody work-|

ing together. He places strong emphasis on registering voters and on the precinct men and women who have been fighting election campaigns down through the years, He calls them “our first line of offense.” So 5»
