Extra Sessio Aid to GOP,
Bray Says
By DAN KIDNEY Times Washington Correspondent WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 — At least one Hoosier congrezsman wouldn't mind coming back to work here right now, Freshman Rep. William O. Bray, Martinsville Republican sald today he hopes President Truman carries out his threat to call the 82d Con gress back into session to deal) with inflation. “That would be the hest break we Republicans could have,” Mr Bray said, = just before flying hack to Indiana “1t would give us a chance to point out the fact that Truman himself is the greatest inflationist of all. His giving steel prices a $5.65 per ton price increase, in order ot settle the 5H4-day strike can't he matched hy anvthing else that has happened to cause prices to continue to increase “T want him to call us back here, 1l.et's debate the whole subject. Then the people will know who 1g to blame for the high cost of Hving."” President Fruman was so proud of his steel strike settlement that he sent a message from the White Houge to the Democratic convention in Chicago July 24. Bpeaker of the House 8am Rayburn (D. Tex.), convention chairman, read it to the cheering delegates. The strike, which the Democratic vice presidential nominee, 8en. John Sparkman of Alabama, admits was mishandled by the Administration, caused an est|mated $4 billion production loss in the United States. Mr. Bray:thinks foreign policy, however, will he the basis for the campaign debates between his party and the Democrats. “We have seen American prestige abroad sink to new lows,” he sald. “Our citizens In foreign countries have heen subjected to great indignities.”
Refers to Oatis
Rep. Bray
He had in mind the long tm- | prisonment of Hoosier newsman William Oatis in Czechoslovakia and not the recent Stockholm episode involving Margaret Truman, Mr. Bray hastened to explain. : “We have watched as our foreign policy seems to vacillate, hesitate, and backtrack.” Mr. Bray continued... We have wondered if we have a real policy at all; Nations friendly to us have heen treated =habbily, and our enemies often have received favors. “For these reasons, and many more, the Amercian people are examining our international relations. More important than recounting the errors of the past and fixing the responshiility for them is the attempt to learn from our mistakes and plot a course in the future which will avold =imilar pitfalls.”
