Accuse Man Of Taking 10% Kickbacks
A purchasing official of the sprawling Kingsbury Ordnance Plant near La Porte, vesterday was arrested by the FBI on charges of asking and taking a 10 per cent kickback on purchase orders, Jack M. Shaffer. 34, LLa Porte, was arrested on bribery and fraud charges while at a Bass Lake cottage with his family. He is specifically charged with recelving 10 per cent of the amounts paid on purchase orders placed by the American Safety Razor Co., which operates the ordnance plant on a contract. A U. 8. commissioner in South Bend last night set bond for Chaffer at $5000, and ordered him confined in the St. Joseph County Jail Mr. King said Shaffer used his position as purchasing followup man to require the kickbacks on contracts for manufacture of tools and dies to be used in fabricating ammunition. “We do not yet know the full amount of the money paid back by the firms,” Mr. King said “But we do have one specific account which will be used to seek an indictment. “Our auditors are now checking all the accounts and we will have the full amount—which may be sizeable — before the case is closed.” 3
