The Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service count the trumpeters after each breeding season. = n on THE SWANS, weighing an average of 30 pounds, once were abundant in this country. But they were such enticing for hunters thev almost the vanishing point, The birds have heen by law since 1924, but their population trend didn't start upward until conservation areas were set up 17 years ago. The latest count showed that Montana has the largest trumpeter swan population. There are 407 in that state.
