R. MASTERS needed all he had: for his jump to three diamon®= on he second apna of bidding. Mr. -Champién _ promptly became slam-minded although he was somewhat discouraged by : the holding of a worthless gingleton in his partner's suit. The =ituation was clarified when Mr. Masters raised the three gpade rebid to four. Mr. Champion's bid of five

Mr. Champion hearts was a cue-bid. showing

an ace. If he had held a real heart suit he would have bid it over his partner's three diamond bid. ” ” ” WHEN MR. MASTERS now bid six clubs, he, too, was showing an ace. And, since this cuebid automatically put the hand in six, it was at least suggestive of a grand slam. But, still wary of his lack of fit in diamonds, Mr. Champion decided to he satisfied with a small glam. If he had held the queen of diamonds, he probably would have gone all the way. Mr. Abel opened the king of cluhs and dummy's lone ace won. Mr. Champion figured that if either spades or diamonds were divided 5-1, he was going get. But if both suits broke no worse than 4-2, he had a good chance.
